November 2010 opening day 5 pointer

Headed up to Harvard Ny for opening day. Little chilly  but nice. Got the house in order and sighted in my marlin lever action .44. Woke up bright eyed and excitied at 4 am saturday. Ate and dressed by 5 am, Waited for my turn on the taxi quad. On our way to the top of the Mt we go. Got settleled in the tree stand. At about 7 am I hear a few crunches with no sight of a deer. A few minutes later to my left and quite a distance away I hear what sounded like a deer. again, nothing. Just wouldnt come to me. (   Then about 7:40 ish I hear some decent foot steps to my left just as I was taking off my jacket to get comfortable with no gun aiming restrictions. I see the tail end of a deer. Get ole binoculars out and there it was. About 50 yards out with some heavy to light brush. To my surprise HE walks right into my line of scope sight. As I put the barrel on the wall of the stand, he looks right up at me. With that I thought he was heading for the hills. Nope, turned to his right slowly and I left off a shot. no movement from the buck, no flinch. thought for sure i missed, as He walks in my direction and down about 30 yards, I left off another and nail him. down he goes for good! Roughly 180-190 dressed, Happy early birthday to me, My first ever buck!

Congratulations on your

Congratulations on your success! That will be a good eating little buck. How does your .44 work on the deer you have taken? It obviously has worked out for you but I am just wondering what kind of penetration and stuff you get out of it. Looks like a pretty neat little rifle. Once again, congratulations.

Marlin .44

Thank you! Well the first shot was about 50 yards or so and it seemed like I missed him. I hit him good but not good enough for a 1 shot kill. I was using 180 grain, Think ill bump it up to a 240 or so. Even though im out to kill a deer, i do have a heart lol I do love the gun. nice short barrel.

Congrats 5 pointer!

I've been hunting with my .44 Ruger for the last 10 years on and off.  I 've taken several deer and that 240 gr. has lots of punch!  I actually switched to a 210gr. this year and shot both my  buck at and doe around 80 yards from my stand.  Both went down but I also felt I missed them both.  That short gun is fantastic in the brush and every year I go back to it.  You'll know the difference with the 240 grain.  Congrats on your buck! go .44!

Congratulations on your first

Congratulations on your first buck. My first buck was just a little spike over 25 years ago but I still have the antlers and can relive every second of that hunt in my mind.

Good luck for the rest of your hunting career.
