Well, I don't think they will

Well, I don't think they will get rid of hunting entirely, as it is their major funding source.  Heck, you can hunt trophy Tule elk there, an hour from downtown L.A., for $20,000.  The elk are not fenced in, all are wild, but the ranch is so huge, and other than a little snow in the winter, there is no reason for them to leave, so they stay all year.

My only concern, as I said, is that they will bring back hunting with guides only.  I was told the management hunts are a big part of controlling the herd, so they think they'll continue, but nobody knows for sure.  We'll have to wait for the outcome of the investigation.

Well, they called me, and the lead guide for the whole ranch was the one I talked to.  Nice guy, he seems truly apologetic.  I picked his brain a little, and it was nice to have him actually answer with his "gut feeling", and not give me some line about not being able to comment.

He said he believes the hunting will come back this fall, which BTW, isin line with the elk season, and the $20,000 they charge for guided trophy elk hunts....   Whistling Don't want to miss that season..... Wink

As for pigs, he said he thought the management hunts would continue, as they are vital in controlling the population.  Right now, there's 5-6000 pigs on that prpperty, and they will not be touched for 6 months or so.  Should be good when they get back to hunting.

As long as they don't try to make all hunts guide-only, and $1000, I am not too disappointed.  Holding out hope that everything will be ironed out.

So Whats The Reason??

5 to 6,000 (as in THOUSAND) pigs on their property and they shut down the hunting?  This is obviously not a game management issue now but the way I hear pigs breed it sure will be pretty quick.  If management / owners are going non or anti hunting they'll most likely petition the State Wildlife Dept. to help control maybe with sharpshooters or trapping/relocation.  In the mean time average Joe's like you & me will be left out when we'd willingly help.  They should pay you to shoot some of their pigs.

Geez, maybe they can rent some of Idaho/Wyoming/Montana's wolves to eat some of those pesky pigs.  Hell, they'll eat up some extra elk while they are at it.

No, it's definately not a game management issue. It's an issue with accusations from a former guide saying they have shot 60+ protected mountan lions..... Wink

They are trying to iron out a new plan on how to hunt, and keep themselves monitored so this does not happen again.  Hopefully they don't do away with all non-guided hunts as their idea of a solution.

Maybe for you, who has access

Maybe for you, who has access to some other prime area.  However, for really southern guys like me, who don't want to dish out $1000 for a pig hunt further up north, it's a great place.  Not to mention having a hookup with someone who knows the ranch well, and will give you all his information, I think it's a great thing.

But, if you want to hook me up with someplace that's just as good hutning, where I will still only spend $450 plus a hotel room, and within about 4-5 hours from me, I am all ears...... Wink

Still can't wait to get on the first list when, and if it opens up........
