These photos were taken with my Canon Power Shot G2. An older digital camera. I was about 40-50 yards from the deer and zoomed in, which is equivalent to about 102 mm lens.

These photos did have quite a bit of background that I had cropped out. When I take digital photos, I always use a large memory card and take photos at the max resolution, so I can crop down and still have a decent photo.

Then to upload I reduced the overall file size, which causes it to lose quite a bit of clarity. So the photos posted here are not as clear as they were.

Here is a photo of an antelope taken at about 25 yards. Again some background was cropped out. This photo also started out much sharper than what I posted.

Its not too hard to sneak up close to mule deer and antelope this time of year. However as soon as the fall hunts start, especially rifle season, they get very spooked and its tough to get close.

Elk I can never get that close to, I think 100 yds is about as close as I've gotten. Take that back, a few years ago when my husband was bowhunting, we were so well camouflaged, that several elk came thundering down the hillside from behind us. We were hidden in bushes on a steep hillside, and those elk almost ran over the top of us. I was so rattled I forgot to take pictures! Laugh

Don't know the McStays personally, but I believe they're long time ranchers in this area. I remember reading about the fire in the local paper and found an online version:

Good luck hunting in northwest Colorado this fall!
