Northwest Colorado Mule Deer Photos

Finally got some photos of the deer we've been seeing. It was almost too dark, but I think the photos are still pretty decent.

Will try to get some more photos, especially of the "big boy"! Didn't have my binocs or spotting scope, but I think he's about a 6x6 (at least!). I love the width of his rack. Big smile

I can see why the outfitter my brother uses in Mt. thinks whitetails a "junk deer" Those antlers are huge!

Mulies are a lot of fun to watch. Completely different from whitetails.

They've been struggling for years, but I've noticed the last couple years (and this year in particular) that they seem to be rebounding and doing much better. Our area of the country had been in a pretty severe drought for at least 5 years, and last year was the first year with decent precipitation in the mountains, and this year has been back to what I would consider normal precipitation. Its interesting to watch how the weather patterns affect the animals.

The mulies are just now starting to shed their velvet. Saw bucks last night busy rubbing their antlers on trees & bushes. Always makes me wonder what causes a deer to start rubbing? Is it instinct? Does it itch? Just curious. Big smile

Yes!!! Colorado's Muleys are looking better and better every year.
Amen!!! for Draw. Unlimited Over-the- Counter tags were destroying our deer.

Thanks CELT and welcome to BGH!

The photos were taken last August on the outskirts of Craig in unit 13.

The bucks are looking fantastic again this year. I'll try to remember my camera the next time I'm out in the evening and snap a few more teaser photos! Big smile

What ranch are you hunting on?
