Has the elk migration started in NW Colorado? We're leaving MN to hunt the 4th rifle season. Looking forward to another fun hunt with some good ol boys.

4th Rifle in NW Colorado was a bust for the 3rd straight year. And to put salt in our wounds, the manager of the Cross Mountain ranch tried to intimidate us off BLM land. We were glassing the mountain as their regulators herded elk past their high dollar hunters. Thanks to our plat maps we were able to easily prove we were on public ground. The DOW clearly looks the other way with these ranches. Herding elk with trucks and intimidating other hunters should be regulated closer.

If you had a problem with a ranch owner or their employees you need to contact the DOW and report it. Give them a written statement of what happened, where you were and what you saw. A number of years ago I was stopped by a outfitter and told that I was on private property. I knew exactly where I was but he insisted that I was wrong. He even went so far as to tell me that I had the first punch if I had a problem with him. Now if he was alone I would of cleaned his clock but he had a buddy with him so I walked off. I reported it to the DOW and after their investigation they pulled his outfitters license, fined him for hunter harassment, and had him up on assault charges witch were later dropped. A year later they nailed him for poaching a trophy bull elk. So they do care about Joe hunter and not just the ranchers and outfitters.

Report those A holes!!! I have got no truck with ranchers, but if their lying about their boundaries and herding animals to so called hunters who pay a five thousand dollars to sit there and shoot while elk are herded to them it pisses me off. A slap in the face an insult to real hunters.

MarkK please report your experience. If you need names and/or phone numbers here locally, let me know. I live in NW Colorado. I have great respect for most ranchers, however the few that conduct themselves in the manner you described make me furious. They need to be reported and stopped!

Yes please report it. Help out other hunters. It is a shame when money is involved ethics go out the window.

Sorry you had such a bad hunt.

We reported the incident. Luckily we got the individual's first and last name. That way they can start with the ranch and move down stream. He identified himself as the manager so that might change things.
