Hey guys, I just bought a muzzleloader from one of my dad's friends. It is a Traditions side-lock 0.50 Cal percussion rifle (I don't know the exact model) and I bought it for $200 from him. He say's he tried getting into the whole black powder thing, but it was too complicated, so he never fired it. I checked my state's regulations and muzzleloaders are okay to use for hunting.
Anyways, I did some reading about firing muzzleloaders, so I know what precautions to take while shooting one. My question is about how much powder to use. The books I looked at just said to read the gun's manual. The problem is, my gun's manual is lost, and the man I bought it from never shot it, so he doesn't know. I already have everything I need to start, I just don't want to guess at how much powder to use. I don't want to hurt myself, or mess up my gun.
Btw, I went to a gun shop and the man told me that 40gr of black powder will easily clear the barrell. Also that if I am shooting a patch and roundball I can co up to 100gr, but if I am shooting a sabot I shouldn't go past 80gr. Again, I just want to be sure before I go shooting with it. Thanks in advance.
