When I was hunting elk last season a hunter in camp shot a bull with an unusual ball of antler growth at its base. I have never seen another one like it.

I've heard those tend to form from wounds suffered while in velvet, then insects get in them, and or the velvet antler tries to repair itelf, causing a swollen mass. I've never gotten my hands on one, but this is just what I've heard speculated by other biologists.
