No Hunting on Sundays?

Have you heard that some states are banning hunting on Sundays? I dont think this is right. I know a lot of people go to church on this day but do they really need to ruin it one particular group of people?

The state of Maine has not had any Sunday hunting for as long as I can remember.

We have never been able to hunt on Sundays. I'm really not sure why because you can fish on Sunday and I see no real difference in either.

I have never hunted on a sunday either. I thought that most places had similar laws. maybe we should ask our local game commissions the answer to this question

We just received the chance to hunt on Sundays here in Ohio THIS year. We could have LAST year, but you had to fall under certain conditions as a landowner to let others hunt on your land.

This year they just said "Have at it." more or less.

Wow, I'm surprised at the posts on this. I didn't realize there are so many locations that are either considering limiting Sunday hunting or have limits on Sunday hunting.

Sunday hunting for me is assumed, since usually the only time off I can swing is a Friday and/or Monday to make it a 3-4 day weekend. Usually it is just 2 days though...

So without Sunday I would only get 1 or 2 days of deer/elk hunting in, since each of Colorado's three rifle deer/elk seasons is only 7 days long (one weekend a piece).

In the land that covets the seperation of church and state, this sounds like a miscarriage of liberty.

Could there be any reason to limit hunting on Sundays other than religious ones? (barring the anti-hunter crowd, which would take just about any reason to get a pot-shot in).

Chuck, do you know why Ohio banned and then re-instated Sunday hunting? Just curious...

No, sorry I don't really know right now.
I will try and look it up, but I just popped in for a minute, going to get packed for a trip to Scioto county today. Going for the weekend! Yahoo!

It's my understanding that some of the Sunday hunting bans are actually 'blue laws'. These are holdovers from colonial or early republic days that were just never taken off the books.MA (which has a Sunday hunting ban) was settled by the Puritans; they weren't overly concerned about the separation of church & state. As they expanded north and west into ME (which was originally a part of MA)and other New England states they brought their customs with them. As New Englanders emigrated west this influence expanded. Chances are where Sunday hunting is banned the custom has come to be accepted over time as "...that's the way it's always been..." F&G departments may now offer Sunday hunting bans for other reasons but I'll bet if anyone looks back far enough they're 'blue laws'.

Hunting is a god given right and should not be exempted on Sunday. Most of the hunters work hard all week to enjoy and settle down in the woods on the weekend. Read "The Ultimate Hunter" its great reading and biblically explains our right to harvest game and hunt. Rut is in here in Indiana and remember main trails and stay in those tree stands for the action will be hot and heavy all day.
