No Elk for Sam

We just got back from our 2nd rifle cow elk hunt in unit 201.  My son, Sam, had the cow elk tag and we hunted hard for 4 days without a shooting opportunity for him.  We did find some elk and were able to stalk up and work a couple of small herds, just couldn't close the deal.  He learned a bunch about elk hunting too.  Overall, it was a fun trip and he's ready to get after it again.

Honestly, I am a little disappointed with the number of elk we were able to find.  The best areas we found while scouting this summer weren't holding elk for our season.  The hunting pressure was pretty light, especially when leaving the roads behind and getting into the timber.  And the elk we did find were pretty spooky.  In terms of a totally limited trophy quality unit, I expected to be in elk more consistently than we were.  Maybe that's our faults for not getting to the right areas where the elk were holding, dunno.

We might try to get out for a late season hunt in December, if time permits--he may have to wait until next year to give it another go.  And our season thus far has been really great.  Good luck to others who are hunting through the weekend for 2nd rifle.  Get out and knock one down!

I am sorry to hear Sam

I am sorry to hear Sam couldn't get a shot off.  While it was a fun trip adding a cow to the end of it sure would have been great.  I hope you and Sam are able to get out for a late season hunt in December.  I know it bothered me after last year's busted zero animal "armed hiker" hunt and having to wait a full year to get back out.  That is hard.  Good to hear Sam learned a lot as it will only assist him in future hunts.

that's rough

But that's also life, not everyone will tag out, but it's still good fun getting into them a little bit.

Well, you got into the field,

Well, you got into the field, spent some quality time together, and as you said, he learned alot about elk hunting.  Short of actually taking an elk, I don't know if it could have turned out any better!

Sorry to see he didn't get to shoot one, but his time will come.  I cannot wait until my son is old enough.  Sounds like Sanm is on the right track.  Best of luck in your future endeavors!!!

I hope you had a good time

I hope you had a good time anyway. Keep in mind that the success rate is 20-25%. That leaves a lot of hunters not getting anything.

Elk hunting is better than anything else I can do in life. No such thing as a bad elk hunt for me.

The most important part was

The most important part was you were able to take your son out for the hunt. Time in the field is the best part of elk hunting. Sorry you guys wern't able to seal the deal but as long as you/he learned some stuff and had a good time I'd say it was a sucessfull hunt. If you can't make it out later this year than there is alway next year.

I have to focus on what

I have to focus on what numbnutz has provided here.  The time in the field with your son far outweights the animals harvested.  Good luck on those hunts after this one!

The time you two spent

The time you two spent together outthere is priceless. I wish me and my dad could go out hunting together.

Don't worry Sam, I know how it feels not to get an elk. I am positive that next year you'll harvest a nice one. Congrats on your hunt!!! Thumbs up

The important thing is you

The important thing is you and Sam got got together and a had a good time. As you stated he learned allot on this hunt and that too is very important. Would be very cool if you can get out again this year and get one. I did that with my son when he had the youth tag. Saw several elk but never could get the shot. Oh well that is why it is called hunting and not getting. I am sure you both had a great time and it was a successful hunt even without getting an animal down.
