NM Unit 45 for Elk

I too got drawn for my beloved unit 45. I've been hunting/fishing/camping that canyon since my father first took me there when i was 7 months old. November of 1958 it was. My first deer hunt. Don't remember it, but pop shot a 30" wide buck that dressed at 252lbs. The head still hangs on moms den wall. Stop the reminiscing.....There are not any Elk in unit 45! Go away! HA!!

No seriously, I've taken several bulls out of that unit over the years. Unless you're a road hunter you shouldn't have too much problem. I don't know some of the names of places, but if you go through East Pecos and up the canyon, that part that burned 6 or 7 or maybe 8 years ago is great. I hunt up around Elk mountain, Rosellia(SP? the old fire lookout) and I have seen several nice bulls across the canyon in the burned area. Or on the way to Elk Mountain, the forest service burmed off the roads going off the the right, towards that same burned area. Horse or walk down in and you'll be glad you did. I'll be camped in the davis-willow area during the muzzle hunt. Stop by and have some coffee.

Looks like they got a missing hunter up there. Got separated from his group. News report says he was supposed to meet back up with his group at Elk Mountain. But never made it. State police searched the area Sunday night. But, have yet to find him.

A friend turned me on to it Monday. It's been on the local Albuquerque stations. I never watch Albuquerque news. He knew that's right where I'm headed. The ABC and NBC local channels. It's always been on right about 7-9 minutes after the news starts. 15-20 second clip. Apparently one of the news stations had interviewed him about some other news 6 months ago. So they were showing that clip of him in a health club being interviewed while describing the current situation. I be sure and check it out tonite too. Here in about 10 minutes.

Wow. They still haven't found him yet. That piece they previously did on him was only six weeks ago not 6 months. Promoting a health fair. Christian ?. Forget his last name. From Santa Fe. Had his daughter on the news clip. Kinda freaky goin up there with him still missing. Still can't determine if they drove in thru East Pecos or thru the Davis-Willow area. The news said they had to call off the search today due to the weather. Said the family had a group searching the area. Resume tomorrow. I hope they can find him soon. If not, with nine days committed to this area maybe I can contribute somehow. I'm packing in at least 900 lbs of gear, food and water (20 gal.) on my ATV and off-road trailer from the Davis-Willow campsite. With all the t-storms happening right now on the weather maps in that immediate area and looking at the low for Tererro tonite, at just 8500 feet, is 44 degrees so it should be near freezing at Elk Mountain. I think I'm ready for it. I've been preparing for this for months, if not a few years, spent thousands of dollars buying good equipment that will keep me safe while hopefully getting me my first elk. What an adventure this is for me. Hope to have a picture of an elk to show when I get back.

If you're leaving a vehicle in the campsite, tell me make and color and I'll keep an eye on it. Locals come up on the weekend "messing" around. Also, leave a note in the truck telling where you plan on being. "Just in case" the authorities break into it to help find you.

All I know is I can't get drawn! 15/16 is always my 1st and 2nd choice and 45 is always my third choice, and the one I get.
I have scouted the 15/16 area several times in the hopes of getting drawn, but not yet. Get a good map, run some roads until you find some remote areas, then walk off from there. 15/16 has little water so look for watering holes. Practice bugling but only use it to locate bulls. After you locate them, you'll probably have to go to them, using a cow call to cover your sounds and keep his interest up. Or find a waller and see what comes in. Bulls usually check their spot several times a day, so watch one and see if he is to your liking.

Here is the latest? info on the missing hunter.

Hope your hunt was a success. How did it go? How was the weather? I was wondering if you saw any good Mule deer as well? Well let us know when you get a chance when you get back, thanks. My hunts only 10 days away, I'm getting excited.

Elk mountain does not seem to be a good area to be hunting game with the hunter still missing. i went in on the 12th and there were lots of searchers still in there with megaphones. they told me later there was helicopters searching the canyon too. kinda freaky the way he went missing. had a bad knee. never went more than a couple hundred yards from camp. never found his bow. all his gear was still in his jeep. the guys i met up with Tuesday asked if i had seen and signs of a body will out hunting. i hope they can find him. this was how it looked right after getting my tent set up saturday afternoon. it got down to at least freezing at night.

i had a good spot right at the intersection of FR 646 and 393.

the boundry to the wilderness was right behind me.

and hers the top of elk mountain... 11,661 ft....nice hunting area....
