how long did it take the fish cop to get back to you? I left him a message like almost three weeks ago now and havent heard back. I am gunna call him again in a day or so. Yeah i understand you not giving up the info on your area of hunting. When we went up through cowles it was VERY heavily trafficed. there were people everywhere up there. but yeah keep me informed and let me know when you get back from your hunt because you'll be the best source I can get info from bc your hunting it a week before I do. Thanks again and good luck scouting and hunting

def bring enough water or a good pot to boil the water up there for 5minutes, the weather was very difficult to judge. we had great weather for hiking sunny and about 70 degrees and then thunder and lighting and heavy and light rain off and on the whole trip. bring you rain gear. It was cold enough to wear a sweat shirt and pants the whole time i was up there in july. the hike was long and hard but I over packed bc I had never camped that high either. it took me 8 1/2 hours to get where I hiked and I went through 120+ oz of water just on the hike. I packed a small tarp as well to put over my tent bc i didnt trust the rain cover and the tarp helped a ton. a good pair of boots, water, food, 1 pot, and a tarp and rain gear are my best recomendations.

You might try to e-mail him also. To tell the truth I have never talked to him. Its my friend who had talked to him. I got most of my questions answered through an article he contributes to for a New Mexico Wildlife newspaper i get quarterly. And the rest with the maps (travel management rules) where you can ride off the trail in the National Forest. So I replied to him telling him that and not to respond to my e-mail. I imagine he's very busy. I'm a state employee also so I found his e-mail address the the state's e-mail directory. It should be on the state's web-site. But if not I can find it.

You can find NMDGF pretty easy online .And I get alot of NM maps from publiclands.com,USGS,BLM,USDA-FS.Great folks. And you can get Pecos wilderness map that has all trails.@ ranger station too. For that altitude in the Sangre Mtns, rain gear for thunderstorms and snow/ wind protection. I'd take a lite tent.I had to hole up 2days last year. Trees flying, blew the elk to nasty bottoms.Good luck and good hunting! Those are some of the best Mtns I've ever had the pleasure....

Guys, check out Hamilton Mesa,You can hike in and let the packers push them back to you.It is a great area for elk, also check out north of Elk Mtn. to go high. But I'd be on Hamilton if I hadn't drawn 6a....Good lock and good hunting! Say Hi to Phil Howe the local warden, great guy. He just won warden of year and is good source of info on the herds.

Do you know that Elk mountain area very well. Specifically from HWY 63 to Elk mountain on FS road 646. Once you get off 63, 1 mile in there's the ?-Willow campsite. Due to an unhappy passenger I wasn't able to do as much scouting today as I'd like. He thought having my truck/trailer at his fishing hole was more important than having it where I didn't get a ticket for riding my ATV on the highway. At least I found out now before I got up there with him and something else made him unhappy. I tried finding somebody available to go with but nothing is going to get in the way of my ultimate goal. Filling that ELK tag. AND THAT'S IN LESS THAN 2 WEEKS!!! I put an e-mail in to Phillip Howes. I didn't see any payment boxes at the campground. It seemed nice. Lots of area to maneuver with picnic tables and toilets. I was kinda surprised there was nobody there. There were plenty of campers along Hwy 63. I guess its the river they want to camp next to.

Did you ever get a hold of the Conservation Officer Howes? I hope he responds to my e-mail I sent Sunday. I can't find anything on the web-site bout this site. If its a picnic area? There was an attendant down at the Terrero store said these sites were dotted for 8 miles in. I didn't see any signs on the first campsite that prohibited over-nite parking. I think I do remember see a "Temporary" campsite signage. But I take that to mean less than 2 weeks. I forget where I read that 2 weeks was the maximum you can camp at a given site w/o moving some distance. I have his number. I 'll try and call him if he doesn't respond in a day or so.

Hike in from Iron Gate, or below Elk Mtn.It can get nasty up there.Get in between rd hunters and packers w/stock.P Howe is very busy these days I hear,I was in office in SF a couple days ago.He will tell you to get off rds and away from people, the elk numbers are real good and they have been getting record rains this summer,as the Jemez have.I'd take a tent and ALWAYS take a h2o filter, only way to go.The high meadows might not have h20. You can't hunt the Pecos Wilderness very well from those campgrounds, too many locals and truck atv hunters . I was just in my unit and found the big boys..... I'm a month and a half away!! tic toc

I talked to Mr. Howes today. Man, what a pleasure it was talking to him. Very pleasant and helpful. He'd been out 9 days on compliance for sheep hunting. Well, looks like I'm on the right track. I was very apprehensive about what I wasn't able to scout last weekend. But, he didn't have one negative thing to say about my plan. It's the Davis-Willow campsite I had questions about. Free. 9 night maximum stay. PERFECT! He considered 646 a great road for ATV's. My hunting area is a good place well above the burn area. I guess there was a fire in there. He said trail 251 at the base of ELK Mountain is not a good trail for horses. He said it had a lot of downed trees towards another peak. Have to check the map if he meant North or South. He expected very few hunters to be in that area during bow season. I told him you said to say hello. He said it had been a while since he'd talked to you. I told him you were helping me on this forum and wanted to pass along your greetings. He said hi also. He said he'd probably be seeing me up near Elk Mountain. Doing last minute stuff (seam sealing tent, rain fly, annex, servicing truck, ATV, putting locking lugs on trailer,...) getting ready. CHEERS TO YOU. Thanks for your help!
