Hello everyone. I need your help please. Does anyone have experience in unit 24? It will be my boys (11 yrs) and I first time in NM for mule deer. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Tips or good area's for a successful hunt? Thank you!
This info was given to me a while back from another forum member. Hope it helps.
"If you like the area throughout the Mimbres Valley, you can try the Royal John Mine Rd off of St. Rd 61. Its private for a few miles but right after you enter the forest there are some good meadows. Further north on HWY 35 you can try Mcknight Canyon Rd and Powderhorn and all of the forest roads around Lake Roberts. Also try Little Walnut Picnic area further west through Silver City. The deer are used to people and there are a lot of them. Its close to town also."
As a Taxidermist I look at hundreds of Whitetail Bucks every year. I know that I have seen many different ways people judge the size of racks on live deer. I think for the most part they all are pretty close. I'm going to give you some measurements that I have noticed being right on in just about every deer. We have used it in the last couple years and have only been off by about 5-6 inches. We do study the deer while bowhunting so we get a little more time to look at them....
