NM 09 choices

New to the best and most congenial forum I'm a member of. Alot of open suggestions and minimul slamming. Congrats on this.
Myself and 2 hunting buds are looking at NM for next years elk hunt.
So far we're looking at Unit 51 AW, Unit 2 ML, and Unit 6a ML.
Staying with standard diy hunts. Opinions on the pros and cons of these choices is what I'm looking for, and of course other hunt suggestions.
I've printed out all the info from the nmdow site, and read the pertaining posts here on the forum. Now I'd like to here from The Hunters.

Welcome to the board:
Some answers: Great choices for the Elk, you might want to add areas 15 and 16s on that list, 15 for the ML, 16 for the rifle, these are areas that a DIY is very possible.

What part of Colo. are you in? If we don't draw res. elk tags in Nev., 9 yrs. and counting, or NM. tags we thought about otc tags in Colo. Maybe units around 62 or 77.

I was hoping you'd jump in with a reply. I've read alot of your posts and replies and you've been a helper to alot of people. Thanks.

Unit 15 was my first choice from everything I've read and researched but when I found out it and 16's were HD/Qlty hunts I dropped them. Since this will be our first try in NM we thought we'd minimize expenses and go with the S hunts.
Lacking knowledge of the areas and probably only making 1 scouting trip, we thought this would be the best way to go. Of course that miight change by the time we apply based on all the info we are able to gather.

If you have decided on unit 15, if you want maps or other information on that area let me know. It is a Big unit and lots of area to hunt

I would go for 15, 52, and 9 if I were coming from out of state and in that order. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your opinions, I really appreciate it.
Now after reading the new regulations it's looking more and more like 52,15, and 16a are the front runners.
Now all I have to do is coordinate the dates with Nv and Utah.

Heading out in the morn for yotes and quail and maybe a bunny or 2.

I am out of state NM hunter and unfortunetly these guys are right about 15,52 and such .16's are tough to draw but you have to appy to draw. Talk to NM G&F too, they are helpfull. I'm looking to go on my first guided hunt ever this year,Gila elk.
