I will tell you the same thing I tell anyone considering buying a muzzleloader for hunting with: The first and most important thing for you to do is to read your state's regulations concerning hunting with a muzzleloader very carefully!

The sad fact is that a LOT of people violate their state's game laws every year because they didn't read the regulations and instead believed what some buddy, or a salesman at a gun shop told them.

I live in Colorado. Here it is illegal to use sabots, pelletized powder, any kind of smokeless powder, or a scope on a muzzleloading rifle during the muzzleloader season. Despite their illegality for hunting, every gun shop I've ever checked sells these things. My own, completely unscientific poll tells me that at least 3/4ths of the gun shop salespeople haven't got the first clue that what they're selling is illegal to use for hunting!

muzzle loading in washington state

the rules for washington state, are as follows, you must use open sights, you can use pellitized powder, you may use sabts if they are lead only, and you can not use 209 primers. however these only apply for the muzzle loading season, you can use your smoke pole for reg hunting season and deck it out with a scope and hunt with what ever sabots you choose then.
