new zealand hunt

just wonderring if anyone can give some idea of the cost for a new zealand hunt. i'm a univesity student in canada so the lower the cost the better. i figure a .30-06 and 12 gauge should be all i need.

based on my one trip to NZ, here is my input. the .30-06 would be a fine calibre for any of the big game--red, fallow, sika, rusa, tahr, chamois etc. (i used my .30-06 on everything with deadly effect (sheep, goat, stag, fallow, bison)
If you are going to hunt birds, the 12 ga should be fine (i did not hunt any birds) . many outfitters offer package hunts for two or three animals, and these can be good deals. Daily rates can vary from $200-400/day. if you want a real huge trophy red stag, be prepared to pay a lot. if you want a nice hunt, go for one of the packages.

If you want a truely huge red stag you will be hunting behind high fence. There are respectable trophies to be had in free range hunting for red deer but you will have to work for it.

Tahr, chamois, red stag, fallow, sika,........can all be hunted in free range situations. Check your outfitters carefully so that you know whether you will be hunting behind high fence or free range so that you know what you are getting into.

Also be aware that it is a common practice to use helicopters to lift the hunters up to the top when going after tahr and chamois and then they hunt down.

Hi Jim, I am a New Zealand hunting guide specialising in offering packages to suit a wide range of budgets. My website address is http://www.ballisticstudies.com. Your choice of the .30-06 is very sound and 150 grain bullets work well on all but the heaviest of game. We have no particular hunting seasons as such and you can book a hunt any time of the year. Stags rut in the months of April and May which is our fall.

I hunted at Shearwater lodge in April and took a stag, goat, and a great Chamois. The next hunting party after us was a man in a wheel chair and his assistant! Both took stags!
If you are interested pm me. The stags at Shearwater are free range.

So there is a very good chance that in 2 or 3 years after i finish school(and pay back my loans) I'll be rewarding my self with a trip to New Zealand. Hopefully to get some wingshooting and almost definitly big game hunting done. If anyone could give me a rough price break down for the cost of hunting some of the deer and of course wild boar and goats. I'm not exactly looking for a trophy just a decent animal anything thats seen more then 1 year.
