New to Washington and looking for a good area to hunt

Hi,

I am new to the Washington area and am looking for a good area to hunt elk and also mulies. Doesn't have to be the same location, just trying to get ready for next season and would like to start looking and scouting now and over the next few months. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the fourm and the state....I would recomend the Mt Saint Helens area or Olympics for elk. The Olympics are gonna be brushy!! I havent the slightest idea where to send you for good Mule deer hunting. Best bet would be in the Blues or Poluse country. Elensburg, Cle Elem, on up to any where in the Oakanogan Valley

cfuselier, here is a link to state game harvest stats. Use it to spy on different GMU's to better help yourself before going afield to scout.

Not the best data, but better than nothing... it may save you a bit of gas...

mule deer/elk

the blue mountains in the southeast is where i hunt. there are lots of mule deer and elk, but they are typically not big and it gets hunted hard. good public land access. you also have whitetails over there, too. fortunately for me, i have private land to hunt on. lots of 3x3's and an occasional 4x4. not saying the good ones aren't there, they're just not too easy to find. it's all spike bull elk hunting and they also get lots of pressure. put in for some permits for elk over there and you will do good once you get drawn...dayton, lick creek, etc.
good deer or elk hunting means crowds if you're hunting public land so get out away from the roads and burn some boot leather. look also at the winthrop/okanogan areas for muleys. that is historically a high deer population area, but also crowded.
can't tell you much about western washington.

For elk I would stick with the west side. Any GMU in Lewis or Cowlitz county would be a safe bet and a good place to start looking for elk. As for mullies, I have never hunted them before but I hear that its good hunting around the Ellensburg area as well as in the Klickittat area which is right around Yakima.

Unit 101 is pretty good for mule deer. The west side is always the best for elk.

Haven't hunted the westide for elk, but i do know if you draw a branched antler tag for the eastside you can get some great bulls. My dad and I shot some nice ones in years past within Kittitas County Southwest of Ellensburg, but you dont need to get drawn on the westside for elk. The Taneum, Manastash and stampede pass areas are decent for deer mainly mule deer, but the stampede pass has black-tailed deer as well. There seems to be a great influx of people hunting the cle elum/ellensburg area with average success. Lots of private property these days now around there.

Careful with the stampede pass unit..it's season is a blacktail season...different season dates from the general season. it's considered a westside unit.
