New stand location!

Well here's the scoop..me and my family bought 20 acres of land in Orange County Virginia which is 30 miles away from Fredericksburg..

On the twenty acres me and my dad picked out a great spot!

Lemme explain it:

My stand is set up in between pine thickets and the hard woods with oaks, and other sorts of trees, so when they come out or into their bedding areas there i am and down they go lol

my back is to the pine thickets and i am facing the hard woods, i am 100 yards max from our drain field where in the future we might put a pond there, and the drain field is about 20 yards away from the house, anyway, 15 yards infront of my stand there is a old tree that fell over and there is a hole where the tree was uprooted, in that hole we put a mineral block and covered it with deer cocaine, 15 yards off to my left is another oak (which is the same tree my stand is on) which has corn spread out around the tree, and then 10 yards off to my right there is a old log that is rotted and it is covered with deer molasses.

I had gathered some acorns for my spot, and i was wondering:

Should I:

A- Drop the acorns from my stand directly underneath my stand or toss them a few yards out?

B- Take the bucket that they are in and set it on the ground full of the acorns and let the deer eat the acorns from the bucket?

C- Spread the acorns out by tossing them before i get in the stand?

or

D- Make a big pile of the acorns by dumping the bucket of acorns in one spot?

So i need your help with that, answer A,B,C, or D and explain why..

Thanks for any comments, suggestions or answers Big smile

God bless 8)

I think that you should leave well enough alone and don't over bait that area. The minerial block & deer caine should do the trick. If you plan on using this stand in the afternoon maybe the acorns, but make sure your using rubber gloves.
If you plan on hunting this stand in the moring, the deer are most likey coming from feeding all night and headed for the safty of the beding area and not want to feed. Are the pine trees big enough to put your stand in? If they are try that, they will give you more back ground cover and also mask your scent better. Are you gun hunting or bow hunting?
Hope this helped & good luck...

I agree - leave well enough alone, especially if you're sure that this trail is near and leads to a bedding area. If they're using it already, you don't have to attract them, and too many "improvements" may spook them into finding/using a different trail.

If you want to bait I would go with C followed by eventually by D, but I don't like messing with bedding areas. I always feel that as long as a deer feels his bed is safe, he may change his pattern but he'll stick around. If his bed gets compromised, he'll leave the area altogether.

yeah it isn't a good idea to set up near or in the bedding area..

BTW, i hunt with a bow, shotgun and possibly a rifel this year, my dad may introduce me into muzzleloading..

Well the deer have been feeding on the corn lately, but never quite touched the mineral block or anything else...

neway, thanks for the advice!

good luck this season!

12 gauge,
It is illegal to bait deer in Virginia. Before you post you idiotic strategies on a website I would check the game laws in your state. Your father should have taught you better ethics, unless he is a poacher. Cry

yeah i know it is illegal to bait in virginia, what we are doing is setting out corn and such to draw them in and keep them in the area..

Once we get them in the general area, then we will start to hunt it as soon as we get the house built, i repeat we are baiting them in to draw them into the area..

my father is not a poacher! I can gurantee you that now...

Basically what we are doing, i am not sure if i posted this yet or not, is we are managing out our property, every little spike and old doe, we are getting rid of...We are leaving the big bucks, and the young does and such..

Anyway, good luck hunting and god bless Big smile

wow sounds like a lot of activity I agree with leaving well enough alone. In minnesota we can't bait for deer but we can use feeders up untill 2 weeks be fore opener a mineral block is not considered bait here so we can leave it out all year. And what is deer cocaine?

Deer cocaine is a liquid, in which deer love, it comes in several scents, acorn, corn, walnut, etc.

Deer love it, you pour it onto the ground and the deer dig up the soil and eat the stuff, it is really attractive and very nutritious to them...

Good luck!

First of all, you do not need to quote everything that typed in the previous post in your reply. we can read the responses as we scroll through the thread.

What you are doing is called BAITING. Putting corn and mineral blocks out, which is illegal in Virginia, to draw deer into the area is baiting.

Where is your farm in Orange County?
