get a cow tag

If you are hunting as a youth, get a cow or either sex tag. That way if you don't fill it, you can hunt any late season in the state, with a few exceptions. Much better opportunity for your first kill. Or you can do what a lot of kids do, just buy any cow tag, don't even hunt with it, then hunt the late season near home on the Front Range.

But, if you're only going out for 3rd season, I'd head pretty far west and/or south from where you're at. Units 68 and 681 are probably getting closest to the first units with decent hunting. Or 82 or 86. 82 is probably way too much for a kid and his grandfather to handle though. Not many roads and huge country.
