New Mexico Unit 2B Tag(s) Drawn

So evidently my dad needs to start playing the Texas Lottery. Not only did he draw a LE Utah Elk Tag, but I just got notice that we both drew Mule Deer for October 29th - Nov 2nd. I know there are some monster mulies in this area, but don't know the first place to start looking to hunt. We are going to be DIY'ers. Anybody ever hunted this unit, know what to expect or where to start? From what I understand snow will be the best help we can get for pushing the big boys down from the mountains. Any help or info would be great. Thanks ahead of time.

Should be an awesome fall for

Should be an awesome fall for you guys, for sure!  Congrats!

I don't have any clue for mule deer in new Mexico 2b. However, I just did a google seasrch, and there are quite a few threads out there on different forums concerning that area.

Seems to be a good population of deer, but it's dependant on weather.  Early, it's hot and the deer only move really early and late.  The end of the season, it's colder and snowy, and the deer move all day.  However, they reference Sept and Jan season.  Looks like you are smack dab in the middle of that.

Hopefully someone here will be able to give you some much better info, but if not, there alot out there ont he web!

I drew the same tag for 2B

I drew the same tag for 2B and archery elk in 13.

I have not hunted either unit but have spent some time working in 2B.

Expect a lot of oil field roads. The drilling has slowed way down and there won't be as much traffic on them as the last few years.

Good luck to you and you dad and maybe I'll see you down there

Elk in 13

which hunt did you get.  1st, 2nd or 3rd.  Ether way find water!!!  The elk are Big, but they got that way because the unit is hard to hunt.  I have hunted it for deer and seen some very nice bulls.  I would go to the mountian range close to Magdalena and just find water.

I never hunted the unit but

I never hunted the unit but have heared the story come out of this unit.  2B where the next state record will come out of.  There is good numbers of deer but there is also a good number of hunters too.  I would say go the northeast of the unit and hunt the Colorado line.  You should have your chose of a big deer.

niceshot smitty, Thanks for

niceshot smitty,

Thanks for the advice. I drew the 2nd archery sep 11-18 in 13. I hope the bulls are bugling down there by then.

I'm really looking forward to the 2B hunt. Hopefully I'll luck out and get some weather to push those bucks around

I plan on making it down there in the next month or two for a scouting trip.

Well I've talked to a bunch

Well I've talked to a bunch of different folks about this unit and it appears the further north you go toward the Colorado line the better chance you have of catching one of the big boys coming down from the mountains to the lower land. But for this to work it has to be snowing that time of year in the mountains on the Colorado side, which sounds like it might be every 3rd year or so. Otherwise you better have a plan b for the hunt. Plan B from what I understand is going to be hunting the native deer that are decent, but not the mammoths you see if it snows. So with that, can any of you guys on here PM me a spot where there might be water around Carracas Mesa, West of Frijoles Peak or around Gas Buggy? I would much appreciate it and be glad to return the favor if I have any knowledge I can pass along.

970Tbone, have you figured

970Tbone, have you figured out a game plan yet? I think we've got my dad pegged for a good bull in Utah, now we are just suring up the plans for the mulie hunt to 2b. I think we might do some scouting in 2b a day or two ahead of when we head to Utah and then maybe a day or two on the way back to Texas.
