All, just found this forum and wondering if anyone could tell me about Unit 15B in NEW MEXICO. I bought a PRIVATE Land Owner tag for Archery in this unit and I know nothing about the unit. The tag can be used unit wide.
I am from New Mexico. Unit 51 is in the Carson National Forest. I have never been hunting there but know that it is loaded with big elk. My friends that have gone all used horseback. This is going to be a new experience if you have never seen rough country. You may want to visit the nm game and fish dept and see if they will allow fourwheelers in the forest. You are going to have one tough time packing an elk out alone. There are some really long shots so pack nothing lighter than a .270. I would recommend a flat shooter like a .264 or 300 mag. I recently completed my first skull plate mount of my buck antelope from the 2010 season. I used a kit from Van Dykes, and I thought I would pass along the tips my dad shared with me, as well as one or two I figured out on my own.
