I am looking to send in for New Mexico Archery elk. I do not know much about the units. I usually hunt public land and seldom use an outfitter. Does anyone have any information? If so, I sure would appreciate it.
New Mexico has a lot of really good information on their website, including population and harvest data. They also have maps of each unit showing the amount of public land available. Another way of selecting a unit is to just go for the Quality/High Demand priced units, under the assumption that those are better places. I will have an elk unit ranking for them by February or March to uncover the sleeper units. Hopefully I will be able to tease out some standard priced units that are as good as the high cost places.
Thanks again for your valuable information. I am planning to research NM as much as possible before the April 7 deadline. I know NM doesn't have a preference point system and from what I understand it is just the luck of the draw. What are your thoughts on party applications vs. individual applications. Does it make a difference? Do you have any statistics on nonresident drawing successes/failures? We only bow hunt and will be looking to apply for archery only hunts.
I don't have any data on the draw stats. It's my understanding applying as a party or as an individual would give you the same odds. I'm going off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure this is how their system works:
Your application receives a random number.
Lowest number picks first.
When your number comes up it tries to fill your highest choice unit that is still available.
No preference system.
I know that New Mexico does publish their draw odds, but you need to make sure you are looking at the correct set, as the outfitter sponsored odds are probably better.
Got a lot of other states to get to in the meantime. Trying to get the entire west done this year.ts, rankings and draw odds by Feb or March.
Party apps will hurt your odds due to when your app is pulled there has to be 4-tags vs 1-tag etc. If you put in resident with Non resident it gets worse. There is a cap on non-res and it has to go through 2-lottery draws if you will. Feel free to ask and I will try to help.
When N.M. pulls you name out of thier hat they will try all three of your choise's befoer they go on to the next person. After all people are done then they will start filling the fourth choise's, and it will be a suprise for you because you dont know what you will get. So if your a trophy hunter then leave the fourth choise blank.
I am NOT an expert. But I'm too cheap to pay for anyone else to do the job (local shop wanted $200 to tan my coyote hide). I've used this recipe for rabbit hides, deer hides, a moose skin, and a coyote pelt. I've adapted this recipe from one I found online. Feel free to use it but use this tip at your own risk and comply with all local laws wherever you are. When butchering: Cool the hide as soon as you can get it off the animal. Remove the hide form the...
