found out today i drew a new mexico elk tag in unit 17 for archery sept.11th thru18th. as luck would have it i also drew a Nevada Big horn sheep tag too, so far. any suggestions for hunting info/guides for unit 17??
never been in that area except to drive through it. working on getting some maps together and have been talking to several guides trying to get a feel of what the area is like. i see there are two wilderness areas (the witthington and the kid apache). have been told that access is reasonably good for the majority of the area and that it is a mixture of topography. some rough, some relatively easy. it's going to be guided for me, i just would like to be able to keep my costs at a minimum and maybe just hire a guide for calling and locating the elk. i have a toyhauler and an ATV so i can be self sufficient. i also have a wall tent and plenty of gear.
There are times when the deer are simply not moving and you're forced to make something happen. Maybe you're up against a full moon or hot weather. This is when a silent drive to force deer to move should be considered.
By silent drive, you're not yelling and making a commotion to scare the deer. When deer are panicked, they're liable to bust out of the cover on a dead run, and any shot you get will be tough to make.
