found out today i drew a new mexico elk tag in unit 17 for archery sept.11th thru18th. as luck would have it i also drew a Nevada Big horn sheep tag too, so far. any suggestions for hunting info/guides for unit 17??
never been in that area except to drive through it. working on getting some maps together and have been talking to several guides trying to get a feel of what the area is like. i see there are two wilderness areas (the witthington and the kid apache). have been told that access is reasonably good for the majority of the area and that it is a mixture of topography. some rough, some relatively easy. it's going to be guided for me, i just would like to be able to keep my costs at a minimum and maybe just hire a guide for calling and locating the elk. i have a toyhauler and an ATV so i can be self sufficient. i also have a wall tent and plenty of gear.
As I sit and glass, which is common for hunters out west, I have sort of quickly discovered something I never learned when I was younger.
In my youth I had enthusiasm and spirit. In my middle to advancing years I have creaky knees, arthritis, and I tire more easily than I used to. Where I used to sit on the cold hard ground I now look for that soft spot to sooth my tired muscles. That leads me to my tip.
Carry your soft spot with you!
In my pack I carry an air filled, ultralight, camping pad....
