Seen your post, I'm not going to be able to help but I am planning on a hunt in 2010 and was wondering if I could get a report from you when you get back.
We are planning a do it yourself hunt in the Gila area. I would really be interested in your experience.
Thanks

sure, i'll post a result. in a couple of weeks. got a call over the weekend that told me that the elk had gone from bugling a couple of times a day to him hearing 10-12 bugles per day. weren't answering each other yet but hopefully soon. i start driving wed and hunt until 24th, so it will get better before i leave, just unsure if it will get hot or not?

21B

I hunted 21B. Like the big game rules book says, "there is limited public land access in 21B". My advice is to apply for 21A or 17 if you want a reasonable chance for a shot or a big bull.
When you return from you hunt of the 16th thru 24th please post your experiences. Thanks

21B can be a very good unit. there may not be a lot of public access, but there are a lot of elk. it's just east of the Gila "proper" so dont expect so see as many aspens, etc. I've hunted 16C right on the border of 21A. THe area is loaded with elk. If i were to hunt 21B (without having a chance to do much scouting) i'd probably focus on the north-west region just where it joins 21A. 21A is a highly sought after unit and for good reason. If i remember correctly much of wester 21B is mixed pinon/juniper/grass meadows. I think you could have some good luck finding some draws to the west that lead out to the meadows. Now the eastern part of 21B (from what i rememeber) is very dry, much like the Truth or Consquences area to the further east. I'd steer clear of that area entirely....way to dry for elk....great for pronghorns though . GOod luck and please post a report of the area and what you.
