New member and new to elk a few questions here

Hi,

My name is Kyle and I moved to Colorado about three years ago when I got bsafe from Afghanistan. I grew up hunting whitetails, and turkey religiously back in Missouri where I'm from. For the last two years or so I haven't been able to hunt much due to school but I have backpacked and camped all across the state. Well lucky for me I'm graduating this summer and I have decided to dedicate my entire fall/winter to hunting. I've been researching for a few months and man is there a lot of info to take in. I missed deadline this yearso my hunts will be OTC. I'm planning onsecond season elk/bear and third season elk, both rifle. I don't careaid it's a cow or bul I just wantdodi resume one of my favorite things, hunting.  My plan this year is a backpack in hunt, my research has led me to unit 34, I'm willing tdodo whatever it takes to make this hunt successful. Any tips for unit 34? Also spam a. A loss for what to do for 3rd season? Suggestions? Sorry for the grammatical train wreck of a post I'm on my iPad as my laptop has suffered an untimely demiss, it thought through rocket attacks and ieds but a tumble out of mI truck did it in!

How were you planning on

How were you planning on hunting 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons for elk with an OTC tag?

Also, keep in mind the bear tag is OTC with caps. That means there's a limited amount available, and will be 1st come 1st served. Get in line early.

I spoke to some guy with the

I spoke to some guy with the dept of conservation or whatever it's called and he said that I could purchase the bear tag with the elk tag no problem, can you not hunt both seasons? If they're over the counter?

Also do you think hiking in a mile or so and setting up a small camp and then hiking out each day with a day pack would be smarter than moving camp each day

You can only buy an OTC elk

You can only buy an OTC elk tag for one season. So, you need to pick either 2nd, or 3rd rifle season. Then get the bear tag for the same season. That's getting a bit late in the year for bears though. Sept is the month you want to hunt them. I'll be doing that this year, and they give you the whole month to hunt. It's a draw tag though, so you can't do that until next year.

As for where you camp. A lot of the decision will be how the weather is. I don't know unit 34, so someone else can answer that better.

btw..You can buy the bear tag with the elk tag, but the elk tag is unlimited, and the bear tag isn't. So, yes, you can buy the bear tag, but it has to be available.

That's a personal choice. 2nd

That's a personal choice. 2nd season usually has more hunters, and 3rd season could have worse weather.

I did some more research

I did some more research today and second season unit 34 only had a 2% success rate last year, so I guess I am prolly gonna change venues, any suggestions?

You can't purchase 2 OTC bull

You can't purchase 2 OTC bull tags, but you can hunt both second and third season. You'll need to purchase a leftover cow tag in addition to the bull OTC tag. There will be lots of leftovers and the list of available tags will be published in July by the CPW. I'd recommend going over that list carefully, deciding if you want to purchase one of the leftovers and for what season (1st thru 4th) and then decide which OTC bull tag to purchase (2nd or 3rd season) that fits. As for unit 34, that is usually best in 4th season when the elk migrate out of the Flat Tops. Unit 12 would be best earlier rather than later but will be very crowded--lots of hunters.

Just so you don't

Just so you don't misunderstand his first line, because I did at first.

You can only hunt the 2nd, or 3rd season with the OTC tag. Not both. You chose what season you want when you buy it.

If you also buy a leftover cow tag you can hunt both 2nd and 3rd season if the cow tag is a B tag.

Do I purchase the leftover

Do I purchase the leftover tag on when the OTC goes up for sale as well? Or can I purchase it before?
