I am moving to KS in the next month or two. I will be working for the department of Homeland Security and will be based out of Wichita. I am an avid deer hunter and am looking right now to live somewhere around Newton or Peabody. How is the deer hunting around there on the public land at Marion or the other near by Lakes? I also noticed there is a large tract of land near Kingman that is public hunting. Hopefully once I have been in the area for a while I will have access to some private land but that takes time and building relationships. Thanks for any help on deer hunting or any other type of hunting in the area.

It should be great hunting, just about anywhere in kansas. I live at Augusta, about 15 miles east of Wichita. A man can stick a deer on public land, as long as he isn't too picky. Public gets a lot of pressure during rifle season.

you have to be lucky, connected or rich to hunt deer on private.

To be honest I am just getting back into bowhunting after 20+ years.

I will be hunting mainly private ground in the butler Co. area.

Also new to Kansas

I'm also new to eastern Kansas. I've moved out here last fall for grad school (KU) and was too busy to hunt but I've scouted out quite a few public wildlife areas around here this summer. I was just wondering how much pressure these areas get and if it is even worth hunting during rifle season? Or should I try to find some private property?

Welcome stonehead Big smile Honestly I don't know how much pressure those areas receive, but I know there are fairly good results and good deer around Clinton and Perry Lake. Never hurts to have private land to hunt on. Sorry not more help on the public land, I've just never had any hands on experience other than scouting early seasons around Clinton Lake. Always saw tons of deer. I use to go out around Clinton when I spent my time at KU. Great place to get away from the books Thumbs up I now live about 10 miles north of Lawrence, Really love the area Yes

Thanks for the input redrider. Yeah, it's always nice to get out by clinton for the day. I did find some more land to hunt in addition to the public land. I guess I'll just have to see how things are as the season gets closer.

I'm going to rifle hunt this year, and maybe during the muzzleloader season if it isn't 90 degrees. I also bowhunt but haven't had time to practice enough with my longbow since I've been out here (like to do 50 arrows a day for a couple of months before the season). It's not worth making a bad hit on a deer.
