New Hunter Wanting Help for Deer/Elk

This will be my first deer/elk season and I would like it to be a successful one. I have tried looking at maps provided by oregonhuntingmap._com and really don't know where to begin to find a good location that is both legal and full of deer/elk. I am wanting to hunt rifle, and I can't afford to drive more than a couple hours out of the Portland area. If there are any seasoned hunters from this region that could point me in the right direction so that my brothers and I can have a fun and successful hunting trip I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance!

Welcome to BGH! I'm not going

Welcome to BGH!

I'm not going to be able to help much. haven't hunted that side in a lot of years. Used to live in Valsetz a lot of years ago. You might try there and Black Rock. Get a map and go to Falls City. When you get to the bridge on the left, straight ahead will take you to Black Rock or left will take you to Valsetz. Valsetz is no longer a town but a place. used to be a lot of deer and elk in both places. I don't know how to get there anymore but the Polk Talbot area out of Dallas used to be pretty good for deer. Someone there should be able to give you directions.

I'm new to hunting as well this is my second year I go to estacada behind promatory lake and wild cat mt. But that's black tail country which apparently are the most difficult deer to hunt if I were you I would go costal elk there's lots of places between here and seaside.
