Hi my name is Jared. I'm new to this forum. I live in Virgina and love to hunt white tail deer and bare.

I'm mainly here looking for some advice for a new rifle. I have been shooting for many years but don't own many rifles just for killing deer or bare in any situation. I have: Marlin .17HMR, Marlin .22, Savage 22 mag, Mossberg 12 Gauge and my 30-06. (just so you know)

My Winchester model 70 30-06 is the only gun I use for deer or bare hunting. But I'm wanting to buy something new that will be good for just about any shot close range or long. My maximum shot would be around 600 yards away. Most of my shots are around 60-100 yards. But I've found a sweet spot where shots would be anywhere from 100 yards to 600.

No doubt I could make these shots with my 30-06 but I'm always looking to buy something new. I like how the ballistics look for the .270 Winchester Short Mag. But I've heard about throat erosion over time. (not that it's a major issue)

The 270 WSM is also a big round for the size of the caliber right? I want something that will shoot flatter, faster and pack more of a punch. Looking at the ballistics the 270 WSM will do all of that. But my dad told me he wouldn't buy one because of the reasons I've already told you about.

He suggested another 30 caliber gun. I could get more out of 180 grain bullet than the 150 I shoot now. So I have been looking at the ballistics for them. Keep in mind flatter, faster, harder.

I like the 300 Remington Ultra Mag. Any suggestions would be great.

Thumbs up

welcome to the forum ..i am also new here ...i have been shooting and hunting for at least 45 odd years ..i have had a lot of different rifles and calibers ..30-30 308 3006 270 even a 303 they will all kill the game if the hunter does HIS part .i sold all of them when i bought my BROWNING a-bolt 300wsm ...one rifle for everything ,180 gr bullets that are bonded [winchester accubond 180 gr.] as for throat erosion over time in the 270 wsm ? i have friends that shoot all summer on the range and never heard anything of that ...i know that the .22-250 is a barrel burner but you don't have to worry about that with a 270wsm ..buy the .270wsm and enjoy it..

I've never heard of throat erosion with the 270 wsm either - doesn't mean it's not possible. But I have met several people that really like them from all over the country. It seems they have good accuracy potential with average recoil - not a bad combination in my book anyway.

Your better off going to the 30 caliber! either the 300 wsm or the 300 win mag will serve you fine. Mosewell have the 180 gr bullet like you said!! Cant go wrong with 30cal. :thumbsup1

P.S. I own the 300 wsm and althought i love the thing i some how went and bought a 300 ultra magnum before xmas....unbelievable is all i can say! Keep in mind if your serious about getting the ultra make sure its not one of them light synthetic stocked ones or your gonna feel it on the shoulder without question!!!!!! I got mine in rem 700 laminated/ stainless with the thumbhole stock, topped of with a bushnell elite 6500 2.5-16x50mm. the scope itself is 1.3lbs so thats great lol.

Do you have a range that you can PRACTICE out to 600 yards? If so theres nothing wrong with you 06.

And welcome aboard.

haha like my signature says.. That's my first mistake since my last.

But thanks for all the feed back. I kinda just need to hear what other people think about it.

Anticipating recoil shouldn't be an issue with me I'm pretty good at blocking things out of my mind. I've been a running back all my life. neener! Rough comparison but still.
