New Hampshire Moose Hunt WMZ "M"

I've been scouting for a month or so on weekends and sometimes after work.I have booked over 30hrs scouting and yet to see a moose. I was selected to hunt WMZ "M" in Southern New Hampshire. Moose density is low but I know they are there. I have participated in several other hunters forums, but this one has some folks from New Hampshire. I was hoping some one could give me a lead on recent moose sightings in this WMZ. I have seen sign in Brentwood, Chester, Freemont, Kingston and Candia. Most of the sign was several weeks old.

My neighbor claims to have seen a cow in Hampstead on the conservatiion land by the town garage. It is, sadly, a NO HUNTING area as posted by our town "conservation" committee. Not really suitable for gun hunting but it would be OK for archery. Still not allowed, though. Have you contacted the state wildife guys yet? Most seem to be at least marginally helpful. There used to be a map on their website showing moose concentrations, but it's not up anymore. There was a couple of areas in Kingston that had "green circles" showing concentrations. If I can find the map I will try to pinpoint the areas. I printed them out a couple years ago......just not sure where they are. I never thought they'd take them off the web site. I would look where you're looking, Raymond, Candia, Chester, Kingston, Freemont. I'll ask some guys at work. What kind of tag did you draw? You've drawn a tougher area. I wish you good luck.

Thanks NH Hunter. I have contacted the State folks and have a copy of the map you speak of. In August I saw quite a bit of sign around Rock Rimmon in Kingston, but nothing fresh recently. I drew an either sex tag. I know this is a tough area as the density is low, but a week in the woods seeing no moose is better than a week in the office....hands down. I have zeroed in on some fairly fresh sign in Brentwood and will probably go there openning day. If anyone you know has seen any of those elusive beasts I'll certainly check it out.

I will check with the guys at work and report back if I get any good info. One of the guys that I work with drew in the unit up by Sandwich. He saw a good bull the weekend before last. Claims he got run up a tree by the thing. Out of curiosity, how did you get the map? Did the state mail it to you or is still on the web somewhere. There used to be a link from their site but I can't find it anywhere. I know a guy who lives in Fremont, but he's not a hunter. This other guy lives in Lee but gets around and I know somebody else that lives in Raymond. I just joined the Raymond Sportsman's club and they say there are moose around there. Good luck and don't give up. Persistance pays off.

I got the map from a friend of mine who got it from the State moose biologist.
It is a large scale with green circles around the areas where moose were taken last year.
I really appreciate your asking around. I've gotten more leads from being out there and asking folks I meet in the woods than anything else. I certainly would have prefered to get a permit in the J1 or J2 area, but I chose zone M as my last choice and got it. I'll take it.
I've scouted the piece of land that the Raymond gun club is on,but not directly behind the club . It's a big piece .That area is the where I'm going if I strike out in Brentwood. I found some fresh sign off Rt 121 in Chester right across from Candia Rd. but that was over a month ago. The moose have moved out of that area. That area off Rt 121 is the same piece of land that the Raymond gun club is in ,but like I said it's a big piece and needs more exploring. Thanks again.

Michael,

How'd you do? The guy that works with me got his bull up around Sandwich three hours into opening morning. Not too big. I asked him if he considered passing it up and he looked at me like I had three heads. Laugh He lives in Lee and he said somebody got one off Rt.102 in Chester. Was that you?

No wasn't me. I had scouted that area in Chester and that was going to be my back up plan. I ended up spending all 9 days in Brentwood. I chased 3 moose all week. A bull a cow and a calf. I know they were there as we would see fresh sign every day. For such large animals they sure can hide good. Well I had an excellent week and enjoyed the hunt immensely.
I set my sights on deer now and hope I can get another moose tag in 4 years. Been nice chatting with you about moose. Keep in touch.

Sorry you didn't get one but it sounds like you enjoyed the hunt. If you draw again someday, what you learned this year will pay off. Hopefully, you'll draw a better unit. I'm off to go chase elk in CO tomorrow. Tally Ho!
