New guy

Hey everyone just thought I would say hi, I'm new to the site and new to hunting in general.  I have been shooting rifles for the last 25 years and I have never gone hunting before.  After several years of thinking about it I've decided to finally take it up as I love the taste of wild game meat and I have in the last few years moved out to eastern Oregon, initially out by John Day now I'm in La Grande.

This year I was late and did not get in on the draw for a deer tag out here so I was going to pick up a second season elk tag to at least get me out and started this year.  I know the chances of getting something would be slim compared to those that have been preparing already but at least I would get out there and prepare more next year.

Sadly all those in my family that hunted are to old or incapable to go out hunting anymore so I will basically be flying solo on this.  I'm hoping that at some point I can find someone local to give me advice and possibly even go hunting with.

Anyway I'm glad to be part of the site and I hope to learn a lot while I'm here.

If your in la grande, The best place for you would be the starkey unit, I hunt there all the time.In fact I'll be there later this week for my archery hunt. there are quit afew elk, if i remember right thats a spike tag for that season. Theres tons of great areas to hunt in that unit and shouldnt have a problem filling your tag, if you hunt on the fringes of Vey's range you should run into small herds of cows and there will be a few spikes mixed in, PM me if you need more info. good luck. Welcome to BGH.

If you get a good map of the

If you get a good map of the unit it will show Vey's ranch. its pretty much in the middle of the unit, I get my maps at bigskymaps.com. There is some great hunting in there. I'm not to familiar with many other units over there. Mt emily has some great hunting but thats a draw tag and VERY hard to get. I dont think they have a otc hunt in Mt. emily. I'll have to check when i get home.

numnutz I actually just

numnutz I actually just picked up one of their maps at the local Bi Mart today and I found Vey Ranch.  One of the other areas I was thinking is up off Ladd Creek Rd as I have offten found traces of elk up there when I go hiking.  I'm going to go and try to scout out the two areas over the next two weeks to see if I can find any promising spots.

Last night my girl friend decided that she wants to go with me on the hunt so we are going to pick her up a tag as well.  Her dad is going to talk to a buddy of his about some possible locations as well.  He is also going to loan us his Remington in case I can't pick up another rifle before then.  I have a feeling if its an older 700 I might try and talk him into selling it to me considering he can't go hunting anymore (poor guy can hardly walk on flat ground let alone stalk around the hills).

Your .308 if more than enough

Your .308 if more than enough gun to do the job, if you found Vey's ranch, I'd hunt off of 5155, 5178,5160, The cows will come down and feed on his property at night then go back into the woods during the morning. with the cows will be the spikes. if you can hunt the sounthern areas below his ranch. also off of 5115 there are a ton of elk. but that time of year they will be down low. Just remember that time of year the elk will be down lower so try to avoid the upper elevation. good luck, our group has taken a few spikes out of there. I'll be over there thursday-monday bow hunting for a big 6x6. hopefully I'll find one. if your out scouting look for a black Nissan Pathfinder with a Oregon ducks O in the back window , That would be me.

also there is a small herd

also there is a small herd with 4 or so spikes off off rd 5135 whick is a spur off 5125. they come down off the back ridge and feed in a small drainage about 100yrd to the left bout 1/4 mile up the rd. hope that helps.
