New GPS arrived

My new gps jsut arrived from Cabela's this morning and I gotta say I love this thing already and I don't know how most of it works yet. I have only used one in the past to get back to the truck on rare occasions as I know my area pretty well. But the old one which only cost a hundred about 5 years ago would take several minutes to lock a few satellites and this one gets them all in about 30 seconds. I picked up an Garmin Oregon 450 for only $250 on sale based on some recommendations here last month.

I plan to use this one to mostly stay on public land on my travels in Wyoming and some areas I have stayed away from that I just wasn't sure of the boundaries. I'm going to order public land maps for it soon and will post as to how well they work when I get them in.

It already went up a hundred bucks still on sale since I ordered it so it looks like I finally did something right for once.

lots of people really love

lots of people really love the garmin oregon. i have the garmin colorado 400t. which has nearly the exact same running platform. but the oregon model has a touch screen (which i chose to not get) but i regret that decision now because the oregon was the more popular model and finding supporting software and hardware for the colorado is already a little difficult.

congrats on the deal you got for your purchase, it can be loaded up with SD memory chips and you can have great BLM maps... which is a HUGE bonus for us hunters!

check out the after-market

check out the after-market software that is NOT produced by garmin.

http://www.kmlers.com/GPSpubliclandboundarymaps.html

i'm pretty sure this is the site. i originally ordered the one from garmin, and it doesn't contain blm data like we want to see it. you need the overlay feature of the other software. unfortunately, i wasted $100 on garmins first.

I ordered my maps from

I ordered my maps from huntinggpsnamps.com and they just show shipped today. One of the extra features they have in addition to all the public land is new for this year they will also have a platte formay to show who owns the private land as well. In some places this could be very useful.
