New to Colorado

I would like to start off by saying I am new to Colorado and new to this forum. I have just moved to the Littleton Colorado area from Arizona. I am looking for a good Elk hunting unit close to Littleton where I can buy an over the counter Archery, muzzleloader or rifle tag. I hunt with all three so I am looking for any advice for this years hunt. I am trying to recruit some friends from back east to join me so non-resident tags may be needed as well. Any advice or direction would be appreciated.

Thanks

There is no good over the counter hunting close to the Front Range. There is good hunting in some draw units, and that's what most of the Front Range is, but even the first set of OTC units you hit when going west on I-70 are fairly poor due to the number of hunters.
My advice is to either be willing to apply for limited draw tags, or be willing to expand your horizons significantly.

I've hunted 38 and 39 just west of Denver for both deer and elk. Lots of deer but the elk are spotty. The biggest issue with these two units is the number of hunter and private land. There are numerous mining claims in 38 and I've been on the other end of a deer that had been shot and ran onto one of these claims. Not a good situation.....

46 is good for Elk and Deer. You can hike into the Mt. Evans Wilderness from the Deer Creek trail head. You'll run into an outfiiter or two but that's all the people your going to see. Great unit for archery. Get up high and take some samll game heads for the tarmagin.

181 and 27 hold lots of game and there's a lot of BLM land...same with unit 161.

I have no bonus points obviously. What are my chances of getting drawn and what units do you guys suggest to put in for close to me? I don't mind driving an hour or 2. I can hunt Archery, Muzzlleloader and rifle. I would think Archery would have the best chances of getting drawn?

I just moved here last week and have been doing a little research in preparing for this upcoming season. I just want to get out and see what this place has to offer. It looks like a little piece of heaven so far. Any advice would be great.

Aslo, is there any mule deer hunting over the counter or is that all by draw?

The mule deer are draw only, but tags are easy to come by on the Front Range. Lots of leftover tags. You need to look at the preference point report, you have a chance of drawing a 0 point tag, but in some places it is better than others. Some units are 100%, some are much less. Thats where the drawing report comes in handy. They are all on the big game statistics page.
Archery isn't necessarily a better draw, but you have to look at each unit. There are 35,000 archers in Colorado, so some units are harder to draw for archery than for rifle. And muzzleloader is sometimes hardest of all.

Your best bet for this year might be to put in for a point for elk and deer. The points are good for any season or method of take. When the leftover list comes out look at it. There are a lot of great left over tags. This will give you a year to narrow down your hunting area. I've bought left over tags for deer and elk the last few years and have been very succeful.

If you just moved here, you might want to talk to the DOW about residency requirements. You might have to pay non-resident prices if you try to draw since the application deadline is less than 6 months after you moved here.
