New CO Bear Regs

Hi All,

I took a look through the posts on this Rocky Mountain Section and the bear section and didn't see a mention so I figured I'd say something.

As of this season if you have any deer or elk tag you can get a bear tag over the counter with caps, not only for the season of your hunt but for all regular deer/elk season and not only for your unit but for other adjoining units.

It's called "Concurrent Rifle" and it's on page 59 of the big game catolouge. That's a whole lot of bear tag for $41.

If you know of a boned out carcass from another hunter it would be worth keeping an eye on. We can't bait or use dogs but I see nothing unethical with keeping an eye on a carcass.

Bear are taking a toll on elk and deer calves/fawns in a couple weeks. Yotes find calves by sheer luck, and cats get the young and slow later on, but when first born and scentless bears with that ultra sensitive nose are about the only thing I know of that can find and eat them. You have to figure the biologists see too many bears right now, it's an either sex tag.

Make sure those critters are all the way dead before posing for hero pics, and cook the meat all the way.

Used to be a big game tag came with a bear tag automatically, might be a good idea to start that up again.

Great share !!!

tagsoup,

Thanks for sharing and I believe it is a step in the right direction. Altough I also feel they need to bring back the spring bear hunt, baiting, and hunting with dogs........

I have been telling the biologists and wardens in my areas this for years !

That is the proof of too many

That is the proof of too many bears but this state will never come out and say it. I agree that the spring bear season should be restored. DOW did nothing to stop the emotional vote back in the day that stopped the hunting. When Maine's wardens poke up this past year the vote failed. As for a free bear tag with a elk or deer tag, you will never see that in this money hungry for profit state.

I also think that it would be

I also think that it would be great to get the spring bear hunt back.  It doen't have to be with dogs but spot and stalk or baiting if you are a archery hunter.

I also know that we are a long ways from being able to get it back with the way that the state is leaning.

Fall Bear

How late into the fall is it realistic to see a bear? I've read different answers to the question, just curious about any personal experiences seeing them in Oct/Nov/Dec etc...

It all depends on the weather

It all depends on the weather in the area that you are located at.  I have seen bears out in late November as long as there was food available and even later when there was no snow cover to make them den up.

Bear Season Changes

The problem with all of it is that CPW alone doesnt have the ability to control regulations such as this. Wardens and Biologists, no matter how many of them, cannot make the decision alone and it requires getting through the buerocratic BS to get hings like this passed. Unfortunately us hunters are out putting time and money towards our craft and conservation and we are too busy to show up and speak out about why this is a necessity while the tree hugging hippies live off welfare and have all the time in the world to protest.

Long story short, logic doesnt prevail in a lot of land and hunting related issues and hunters need to do a far better job of being vocal and political. CPW cant do it alone.
