I took a look through the posts on this Rocky Mountain Section and the bear section and didn't see a mention so I figured I'd say something.
As of this season if you have any deer or elk tag you can get a bear tag over the counter with caps, not only for the season of your hunt but for all regular deer/elk season and not only for your unit but for other adjoining units.
It's called "Concurrent Rifle" and it's on page 59 of the big game catolouge. That's a whole lot of bear tag for $41.
If you know of a boned out carcass from another hunter it would be worth keeping an eye on. We can't bait or use dogs but I see nothing unethical with keeping an eye on a carcass.
Bear are taking a toll on elk and deer calves/fawns in a couple weeks. Yotes find calves by sheer luck, and cats get the young and slow later on, but when first born and scentless bears with that ultra sensitive nose are about the only thing I know of that can find and eat them. You have to figure the biologists see too many bears right now, it's an either sex tag.
Make sure those critters are all the way dead before posing for hero pics, and cook the meat all the way.
Used to be a big game tag came with a bear tag automatically, might be a good idea to start that up again.
