new to co.

new to colorado but not elk hunting I an looking at gmu 24 I hear it's not a bad area if you get away from the roads. whats a good trailhead to pack in on 3-4 miles will be no problem might be good for 5 depending on how rugged the terain is? I was looking at the trappers lake area . or I am open to suggestions. I know the hunter density is high but so are the elk rag horns are fine or even cows we are in it for the fun and the meat although horns would be nice I've looked the area over on google earth and it's hard to see much in the way of trails the marvine trail looks easy to get to any thoughts? any help would be appreciated thanks

Looks like you've got it pretty well covered. Marvine, Trappers, Big Fish and Skinny Fish(I think that's actually 23 though) are all good. You didn't mention what season, but the limited archery tag, muzzleloader tag, and 4th season will have the fewest hunters. The terrain along the trails isn't bad, but you need to get off of them to get after the elk. Then it gets steep.

we are looking at first rifle if we get drawn or second rifle if we dont get drawn if we go second rifle I've thought about hunting gmu77 near pagosa springs but any other ideas I would consider I know it will be difficult to avoid other hunters in an otc area but its been my experience a lot of people are either out of shape or try to road hunt so I'm hoping to be able toget away from most of them by hiking farther, siting and glassing for elk then moving in for the kill sometimes you can let the pressure work in your favor also has anyone hunted gmu 14 during 2nd fifle? thats another area I've considered

You might consider trying the third season this year because of the extra weekend. It might get cold and be too high, but then if its warm, it might be a low pressure high success hunt for those areas.
