New to the board. Info on CO GMU 62

Hello everyone. My name is Jon; I'm writing from Morgantown, WV. I will be going on my first elk hunt for the 2nd rifle season in GMU 62. I was wondering if anyone had any tips, or pointers that would help?

From what information I have gathered, I understand there will be a lot of hunters there. Is there anyway to get away from that? Is there any specific types or wilderness or terrain to look for?

Thanks to anyone who can offer information, it is much appreciated.

Thank you

Thanks for the welcoming. I have been reading this board for a couple days and have found many tips already. The posters on this board seem very friendly and helpful. I will post my results of the hunt for sure.

The focus on my hunt is elk, but I am also considering picking up a bear tag as well. From what I have gathered there are a moderate amount in this unit.

Is this your first hunt in 24? I considered that unit at first, however I am going with my dad and unit 62 allows ATV use which will benefit him as he is getting older.

Yes this is our first time in 24. In the past we have hunted in 78 just outside of Pagosa Springs. Just decided to look at some new country . We went out in Sept. to have a look around ended up seeing 6 bulls during the course of a week. But I'm sure things will be a lot different now. We will be back in the wilderness a few miles in hopes of getting away from the pressure which if I may mention is a very important thing to keep in mind while elk hunting, they just don't tolerate pressure. And w/ that being said keep in mind these animals have been hunted for weeks by know. Try to find the dark timber pockets that are tough to get to typically the higher the better.

hi Jon,
Unit 62 will be busy withhunters. The elk can be anywhere in the unit. Might try the Bear Pen area or Cottonwood area.

I hear you on the pressure. That is one aspect I am worried about in 62. I am hoping to be able to get far enough in the bush to get away a little bit. I have google earthed some satellite photos of some timber areas I am hoping to get too. I also talked to a lady who works for the national forest service in this area and she said the pressure really varies per year. Beyond this I cannot think of anything else to prepare. Just hope for the best!
