Welcome to BGH Allen.

They don't sell animals, they sell trespass right.

Hunting for the few

9/15/2009

To: Mr. Durfield, Plum Creek Logging

From: Mr. Timothy L. Allen

I have lived in Newport, Ore for over 50 years. I have been hunting the South Trac unit near Toledo, Ore. for 40 of them. Long before PCL bought GP. I am a Houndsman and a stockholder in PCL. The past 3 or 4 years our company has put up a sign that doesn’t allow people on our property after dark. Hunting raccoons with hounds is done at night to avoid conflict with other hunters, such as deer, bear and elk hunters. I have asked for and been given a permit every year in exchange for killing all the porcupines that my dogs catch. I have caught as many as 23 in a season. Last year I only caught 4. These porcupines are the giant Canada breed and do considerable damage to our trees and my hounds.

The South Trac area is crossed with public, private and Plum Creek land. I need a permit to collect my hounds when they cross on to our property. I have for the first time since the passing of Matt Higgens, been told no. Matt, liked our arrangement so well he gave me the gate keys to different areas. Dog hunters keep these and other varmints under control as I am sure you know. It seems as though a Mr. Steve Gravell, Toledo Ore. Manger dose not know this for he won’t even talk to me. If I hunt my hounds during deer, bear and Elk season during the day there is a high probably they may be mistaken for a bear. I run Black & Tan Coonhounds and they do look like a small bear. The season runs from Sept. 1 thru March 15. I need a 24 hr. permit to keep from getting a ticket and fine.

Can you help me?

Respectively yours

Tim Allen

No nerve hit, your questions were answered the first time. The answer to not having to pay someone to hunt on their land is to buy your own land, other then that you have the public land option and you WILL be hunting around ALOT of people. Its really that simple.
Better units and better land is very hard to draw.

The reason these companies close up their land is because the public use them as dumping grounds for garbage, old cars, and old tires etc. I've worked in the Oregon woods for 30years . I've seen it and continue to see it. They do not close off public land only their lands. Also they own the roads. If you go and tlak to them they will let you hunt, but they will not let you drive past the gate. Shame on You!

All in all I can't blame them. If people weren't such pigs we would not have this problem.

On the other hand it is very profitable for private companies to lock up their lands for fee hunting , it's an economic issue especiallyt now that the timber prices are so low. I don't like to see it but it's true.

Just my $.02

Oh Well

They tried that crap in Alabama and we still went hunting. Poachers will hunt the land so why shouldn't I. neener!

With so little public land in the Southeast, it's either that or stay home. Regretfully for Texans, the land is very arid in many parts and you can be seen too easily.

One the best bucks my cousin killed was on Scotch Timber land. neener!
