Hello Goldgrale,

There are many states that offer black bear hunting from Maine to Alaska to some of the Canadian provinces. Black bear populations have been on the rise nationally and permits are easier to come by then just 10 years ago.

BGH regularly posts information about black bear hunting here:

Black bears are not that hard to hunt if you can find what they are eating. Find that and you've found them. Size can be determined by paw prints as well as scat size. Berries are a safe bet right now.

Go check out some swamps.
Bears will eat skunk cabbage, and if they are good and green you should find evadence (spelling) that they are around.
Believe it or not they will pile the cabbage up like cord wood sticks.

The east coast and the extreme western counties of N.C. have bear. You didn't mention if you wish to use dogs or not. N.C. bear laws are pretty much geared to the dog hunters which makes it tough on still and stand hunters, but you can be successful. Get a game laws booklet and check the harvest records, look for the highest harvest by county and what kind of land (public or private). Then use what applies to you. You might concider topo maps and look for suitable terrain, scout some and go for it!

scott,I have found here if you go to areas that aren't hunted hard you have a better chance, than you do if you go to an area that has had a good harvest.
I have found that areas that have a high harvest get hunted hard.
Just a thought.

Hi again, Maine guide. The bear population in North Carolina is pretty much concentrated to either the coastal swamps or the moutain Laural thickets. The bigger bear seem to show up most frequently on private coastal land. Of the public land I have hunted, dog hunting rules. I choose to still/stand hunt. Dog hunters score the most kills and they hunt everywhere it's legal to, so I follow their record of success, or the previous years harvest records. The origional question asker lives in NC and it was my guess that he didn't have dog's. Monitering harvest records along with the use of topo maps has worked, but your idea has enough merit that I'm gonna look at my maps again. If I can find places that might be used as "escape" or "safe" zones from hunting pressure without being state recognized bear sanctuaries it may work. Thanks.

Scott, anything is worth a try, but I think if you scout some of these areas you will see.

Back home bears would eat oats too before they ripened and were still green and pulpy. If you could find such an oat field check it for sign - bears in a green oat field leave a trail like a mini twister. They'd lie on their backs and pull the grain down into their mouths and strip it. It was hilarious to watch.

If this helps I have never hunted black bear before let alone seen one! My first time was in August 2004. If you can sit still long enough and have patience and if you are a good shot you should have no problem. All I ever shot at was skeet! My bear was 373lbs. First you need to decide where you want to hunt. we wanted to go to Maine so we got on the internet and looked for Maine Guides. Good Luck......Donna
