Re: Nevada or Utah Mnt. Goats

Hoggetter, good luck in getting your Ruby Mtn goat tag. I've got 17 bonus points (18 if you count the one I'll most likely get this year instead on a tag) & that doesn't include the years I put in prior to the bonus point system. Just keep applying, cross your fingers & pray to the hunting gods - you might luck out. I was looking on the NVDOW web site & they had an interesting table that showed the number of points successful applicants had when they got a tag. As you can guess, the majority of tag holders had multiple bonus points but there was a good number that had less, some with six or less points. I've talked to a few that had only 2 points - go figure!!

After a couple of blown disks compliments to back packing elk out (Idaho about 10 years ago, N. NV two years ago) I'm not sure if I can get 'er done now if I do get a tag but it'll sure be fun trying.

You've got some excellent scouting history under your belt already with your previous deer hunting experience. Go with what you know. If/when I go it'll most likely be via Lamoille Canyon or maybe working south out of Soldier Creek. Nice goats out of the Smith Creek area south of Lamoile canyon too but typical of hunting the Rubies finding access thru the ring of private property can be tough. The season opens in Sept. so a lot of hunting can be done before the deer hunters get out there. Also most of the deer hunters have a hard time getting much past a mile from their rig (truck or atv) especially up into the cliffs & mtn tops. Some goat hunters will wait until October to hunt, hoping for a better winter coat on the goat but as you know, it can get ugly up on top REAL quick. Up top of the Rubys can be a serious adventure if caught up in an early 3 or 4 day long storm.

Best of Luck!!

Yeh i checked out the draw odds summery and i always wondered who the unlucky guys were with all those points and seeing guys with four points get tags.
If you draw a ruby tag send me a PM and ill see what i can do for you, Unless i draw i might be tight lipped, or maybe we can go together. What state are you from?

Re: Nevada or Utah Mnt. Goats

I'm looking out the window right now & would be able to see Ruby Dome if there wasn't a white out at the moment (ya gotta love these spring storms). LIving this close but I just don't spend a lot of time in the Rubies. Most of my deer hunting is in other parts of the State, areas with less competition from other hunters & with alot better access.

I can't feel too bad about bad luck on goats; been lucky with elk & antelope tags, had a couple of sheep tags (one desert on the wall & one unpunched California tag - that one hurts!!).

Finding a nice goat shouldn't be too hard. Getting up there & back, hopefully with alot of meat and a big white hide, without killing myself might be a real rodeo ride.

I've never been there but if

I've never been there but if it is typical goat country you are going to have to go high into the high meadows and ledges and do a lot of glassing to find what you might consider a trophy.
