Stickum: The most common use of the .22-250 is for varmints, utilizing bullets that fragment rapidly, or are just a soft nose. These should NOT be used for deer. Most ammo you find will be of this type. Avoid it.
There is good ammo for deer though. Federal makes at least two deer loads now, a 60 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw and a 55 grain Nosler Partition. The .22-250 bullet is so light that it is important for it to retain as much weight as possible while travelling through the body of the animal. Stay at the 55 grain and above. Winchester used to make a 64 grain power point for it, and that would work also, but I'm not sure if they still make it. Or if you happen to reload, stick with something that retains weight, like the Partition or Bear Claw. They provide good mushroom but still retain a high percentage of weight. The weight retention helps penetration.

stickum; I have used a 22-250 for deer since 1975. I have no complaints.
I use the (hand loads) Combined technology 50-grain silvertip. I get pass through shots each time. The Nosler solid base bullets work equally as well for whitetail. I know that most hunters will condemn this caliber as a deer rifle, but it does work. I have taken one deer up to 203lbs (on Foot) with this combination. I have found bullet placement is not as critical as some say with this caliber. Wink
Good luck. Good Hunting

Stickum, Before you hunt with a .22-250 check your local Wildlife Hunting Laws for Big Game Minimum Calibre Laws.

Most states require a minimum .24 calibre for hunting Big Game animals. I know this is the Rule in Florida, Georgia and Alabama.
Here in Florida you could loose your firearm, vehicle and all your personal effects that you use when violating a Law while in posession of a firearm.

As mister_venison pointed out, your .22-250 is a varmit rifle and should only be used for that purpose reguardless of how many fine folks tell you about all the fantastic kills they have had with it.
