Need Help Unit 10 Cow

I finally got my 3 sons together and drew 3 tags for cow. I have 2 sons who 1 is back from Korea and stationed at Luke. He just got papers to be shipped to Iraq the 1st of December and my youngest who will be starting boot camp for the Air Force in January which leaves the middle son who fortunately is going to College in Arizona. I knew after several years of missing oppurtunities to hunt together I would get lucky and get a chance to get to hunt together.

We love to hunt and fish as a family and this year we got drawn to Unit 10 and have never hunted this area. We could use some expertise from some one who would be willing to share their knowledge of this unit. We have cow tags and just want to beable to bring some meat home and have a life time of stories that we would be able to share with each other forever.

I know this is a lot to ask anyone to give up their hunting spot, but I just need to be with my boys one last time before they leave again for a long time.

Sounds like a great time for you all to get together and I wish you the best of luck. The cow hunt is several weeks later than the bull hunt in 10 and the ranchers stop filling the water tanks by that time to force the cattle down ,so you won't see the amount of elk that the bull hunters see as a lot of them drop over into the yampa valley in the monument. So water is key to finding elk.Take the road north from the Dinosaur monument visitor center ,moose head mountan and buckwater ridge will hold elk but it will also have plenty of other hunters , maybe good maybe not ? Further up the road you catch 16 rd off that try hells canyon area , service berry and johnson draw areas all the time looking for water holes or full tanks.About 4-5 miles up the main monument road past 16rd near the monument boundry on the right there is a road that sneaks back to round top mountan on BLM land this is pretty high and I dont think there would be any water unless there is a lot of rain before the season but it's a great view . Bring your best glasses and maybe a trypod for them as this is BIG OPEN country and you will spend hours glassing . Most of the cow elk that I have seen were in the sage country .You will need a BLM map to show the private land as much of this is checker board boundrys Have fun good luck !!

Great Thx

I will take your advise and hope to get back up there on the 26th of Sept. My son still has duty at Luke and has limited chase to scout with me. So pretty much of this will be either on my own or with another son who hopefully can get away.

Even so this will be my best time ever, getting the chance to have them together. Are the areas you described hard to get to ????

No , the roads are very good but take chains if it rains or get a wet snow they get VERY slick no mater what kind of 4wd you have.ATV's may be nice but not at all nessary ,you can camp almost anywhere. After a few days we went to dinasaur to get ice and washed up in the water spicket in the town park ,felt good but don't know what the neighbors thought.. Tip I pick up chains at thrift stores or yard sales for next to nothing If you have big tires you may have to make one set out of 2 .. Good luck , we expect to see pics of the elk with your boys !!

I will make sure we take pictures of our hunt and I believe the area which you decribed was in Colorado,I could not find any of the canyons on my TOPO map.

I am still waiting for some ones reply....does anybody know this Unit 10 in Arizona.

I could use some advise, I was going to start my scout at Kiabab Lake then head west towards the airport. I have talked to some fellow hunters who suggested the North section in the lower valley areas. I have never hunted for elk in open areas and donot know where to start.

I haven't hunted 10, usually I stick with 6A, 7E or 11M.

If I were to go to a strange unit for an October hunt, I'd head out either this weekend or next to scout during the rut. Locate some bugling elk, find out where the nearby water, food and bedding areas are. If you can track down a couple good areas like that you're likely to do ok in a month.
