Welcome to BGH Big smile
I would suggest a Ruger 10/22
As far as hunting with a .22 you are limited mainly to smaller animals. Great for rabbits, squirrel, coon, etc.

Hunterman, , Im curious in what way a 17 will "outlast" a .22?
I have a marlin 60 that was a christmas present when i was 9 that still shoots as true as new and it literally has thousands of rounds through it. (im 37 now)As well as my grandads .22 thats older yet. A ruger 10/22 thats been around since I was a kid that in all likely hood probably has well into the thousands of rounds through it as well. A couple 22 pistols that arent far behind that number for rounds put through them that are atleast 15 and 20 odd years old.
Infact almost everyone i know has an old 22 for a plinker and every one shoots better then the person squeezing the trigger.

Romey I was thinking the same thing
I know of many 10/22 owners that should have worn out their barrels long ago (well into 6 figures of rounds fired with no issues
I worked for sturm ruger & those guns are tough
imo the best 22 rifle ever made
when I worked there (almost 20 years ago) they estimated the sales of the 10/22 & stated that they have sold so many that every household in the USA should have 3 then
I guess someone has 6
never bought one
but I do have two rugers
Ultra light ALl weather .270 w/ blued action (only two out there that I know of)
& the New LCP .380
both awsome shooters

.22 will outlast a .17. Typically barrels of higher velocity cartridges will wear more quickly. Not sure what the poster above meant by that...

Ruger 10/22 is a great starter. Fairly reliable autofeeder, easy to shoot, many accesories etc.

You state it as fact, concidering I have never even heard of a burned out 22 LR barrel , the fact rifles that your grandfather hunted with as a kid still shoots as now as well as it did then and the 17 hasnt been out long enough to compare barrel life to these old .22 lr, I have to disagree. A
s far as who or what is higher velocity, a .17 pill hitting 2550ft/s without even sweating hard isnt exactly slow, I will have to respecfully disagree.
Not to mention .22lr is FAR FAR cheaper to shoot then a .17 and is made for the same job although the .17 files a gap on coyotes the 22LR wont. Take Yotes out of the equation and I beleive all things concidered the .22LR is still king and in little danger of being dethrowned.

Hmmm...hard to tell who you're disagreeing with Romey. In any case, if you're disagreeing with me maybe because I wasn't clear the first time. I agree with you...

What I said was that a .17 is a higher velocity round (not really disputable), and that GENERALLY barrels or higher velocity cartridges will wear out more quickly. So, a .22 should be, and historically has proven to be, the more durable piece of equipment.

Sorry if you misunderstood before.
