Need help locating Elk..

Hello this is my 3rd Season trying to hunt elk. I have a cow tag and everyone says if your any kind of hunter you can locate cow elk. Well I am not any kind of elk hunter yet. I did fill my Buck tag with a nice 4x4 and I am trying to fill my cow tag.

I am hunting in area 56 in Colorado. I have seen a herd on some private land but I am never in the right place at the right time to get one. I have worked on some calls but still nothing. I have also hiked a lot of the area and seen 1 to 2 day old tracks but haven't seen any fur or fresh sign other than the private land.

I see I have a lot to learn about elk but only having one more weekend and a couple of mornings left of this season, I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on locating more elk.

If anyone here knows area 56 and would like to give me some tips on where to go, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks in advance.

Hey JeremyC,
Sorry, I can't help you with specific places to go, I haven't hunted unit 56.

Here are some ideas though that may help.
Since there has been no weather this week in CO, go high in elevation, near timberline if possible.
Plan on hiking as much as you can, the animals are there somewhere, you just have to find them. Go farther than the other guys are willing to go.
Stop in at camps and visit with other hunters. Most will give you good info on where they may have seen some animals.
Keep working on it, persistence pays!
Wishing you the best of luck.

Thank you for replying so quick. Would you recommend going to a part of the area that I havent been to? I know my way around the lower parts but I know the weekend is going to be crazy with people. We have 4 hunters 2 bull tags and 2 cow tags. We were putting off going to a part of the area that we dont know but there are some higher areas we could try.

If you think there are elk in the area where you're at, I would recommend staying there. I think that hunting a new area is a 5 year plan, it takes 5 years to learn how the game moves in a particular area and how you can take advantage of that movement. There are two ways to learn that. One is to be out there climbing the hills, making mental notes of what's going on etc. the other is to use other peoples experience. Sounds like you were out last weekend gaining experience. You know more about that area than somewhere where you haven't been.

If you don't think there are any elk in the area, maybe a relocation may not be too bad of an idea. Talk to other hunters, on the whole we are a pretty friendly group and most will help you out in getting to an area where there have been elk seen.

I'm assuming you are hunting fairly close to home and you might know someone who is very familiar with the area. Start a conversation with them and use their experience.

Hope these ramblings help you out some. Good luck! Post pictures of your buck for us to see.

I will post up some pics when I get them from my brother in-law.

Ok, you said if there are elk in the area then hunt there. I am sure there are small herds of 2 or 3 running around but where your talking about an area of 40 miles, thats a lot of ground to cover to try and locate them. I am sure there are more but the hunters we have talked with havent really seen them either. Except for the private land. All of the Elk we have heard about people getting in the current season have been either on private land or in the public next to the private. There is so much pressure near the private I am not sure if one can coax them into coming over the fence. I have tried calls but again, I am so new I am just trying what I saw on a Carlton Calls DVD. I am not really sure if I am calling right. I have read a lot about calling but I am not sure if there is a method used to get them to come if there 600+ yards away.

Anyway I may talk to the other guys about checking out up high.
