Like Western Hunter said, you'd be suprised to see how much stress that recoil will put on a rifle. Several years ago I worked for Knight Armament, we built sniper rifles, rail systems and night vision scopes. We always took high speed video whenever testing the equiptment and you would be amazed at what really happens when you pull the trigger. If you ever saw the show Time Warp you know what I'm talking about. I've seen footage that made it look like the scope was mounted on a see saw, and the barrel was made from rubber. I bet that you just knocked the scope out of adjustment, they're designed to survive recoil not a sideways blow.
