Need help with cow elk

OK, I've been invited to join some friends on a elk hunt in Colorado GMU 171 I'm picking up a left over cow tag for first season, I figure for my first elk hunt and cow would be great.
I was wondering in anyone on here has hunted up there in the past. these guys hunt over around Gould and I was going up a head of time and scout but the only weekend I had free is no longer free I have to be in Broomfield that weekend for Broomfield days So I was looking for some advice. since I will only have the friday before season I want to make the best of it. Should I focus up high like 10,500 feet or do elk prefer lower ground? I don't know much about elk I've just been learning as I go. Also how do you guy heat your tents, wood stove, gas stove or coal?

Thanks for your help guys. hard to believe after hunting for over 20 years I'm a rookie again.

I've only hunted Elk in one previous season because I was told to pick one up in case I saw one. I've been told that depending on the weather, the elk will move down or up. So i guess it depends on when your hunting and where. I've noticed so far where in hunting that the Elk have already come down some from the highest elevations and we were about 9,000 feet and saw a good size herd. I'm in the same boat as you though with the rookie elk thing, this is just the advice I've been given so far.

I'll be hunting first rifle which is Oct. 11 - the 15th I think
Elevation will range from 8000 to 10,500 feet I think these guys camp around 9,000 feet. others I have talked to tell me to hunt around the refuge which is north of us at a lower elevation, But my buddies think we need to stay high. I feel like a fly in a tornado. I'll just keep studying some maps and taking all the advice I can get and we'll see what happens.
Thanks
