Need Help for Cascade Elk

Hey all,
I have an Elk trip planned for the North Umpqua Basin coming up here in just a few weeks. My grandpa who logged the area most of his life was taking my dad and I to his "Secret" spot, however, my grandpa may not be able to go now and isn't willing to tell us where we were going if he's not coming. My experience last year up by the Toketee Airport was horrible, the conditions were warm and dry and there were WAY to many hunters!
Does anyone have any suggestions on a good place for a base camp with decent territory around it? I am in Idaho for work right now and have had no time to scout, I am getting into the area 3 days before the season opens and am not opposed to putting in a LOT of mile on foot. I know there is the Boulder Creek wilderness area up in the North Umpqua, does anyone know anything about that area? I'm not asking for anyones sweet spot, I'm just not super familiar with that area but would love to see more than cows this year! eye roll

Yeah, east of Roseburg up in the N. Umpqua drainage, gorgeous country.
