Need ELk help in Colorado GMU 54

Hey Jim here. Im new to elk hunting and am going to Colorado GMU 54 (Gunnison area) Third season (NOV 5-11th). WOuld like some advice on late season hunts and where to go in 54. I did some map scouting and plan on splitting up into two pairs. I was looking at the area around Red Mountain lake and Flat top in the eastern side of 54. ALos I have read in the forums that during the late season the elk like to stay in the timber durin the day on north facing slopes. is this right.?. I just need some advice on how to go about this. Been hunting for deer never elk. We plan on being set up before sun up in our areas on opening day for third season, but I just need to know how to go about it and where. Thanks. ANything you can help with would be great

Depending on the weather (it's been quite balmy, the elk will move when the snow depths force them too. Don't think you'll have to worry about that right now. The rainbow lakes area gets hunted hard. Without going to extremes and telling everyone where to go, flip me a PM and I'll point you in the right direction.

Right now elk don't seem to be in 54 maybe over towards West Elk Wilderness but not at Carbon Creek where i was deer hunting no one saw a elk , Boobzilla where you from sounds like you might be close.

PaRu, I'm south of Denver. Spent many days in Gunnison and recuperating from parties at Wasted State.

54 can be hit or miss and it's rough-arsed country. We've done alright in there in past years. 53 has some elk right now (and i'm sure there are a fair quantity ion 54 as well). Coal Basin showed alot of promise during the archery season.=
