Need advice: First Time Bear Hunt

I will be doing my first bear hunt "still" Hunting from a stand in SE NC. I recently was out black powder hunting and came across a 400+ pound black bear eating in a peanut field. I need to know if my .270 winchesteris good enough and also how to attract and keep him around legally. Any advice will be highly appreciated. I should also mention i walked within 30 yds of him before being spotted. He didnt run he just "mozied" on off into the tree line.

Update: 3 more bears were sighted 2 days ago any advice you can give me will be extremely helpful. This makes 4 bears within a 1 mile range.

With proper shot placement a .270 will do just fine. I have killed 16 black bears from 100 lbs to over 400 lbs with mine.

UPDATE 2

Recently got my trail cam down from my wifes stand. Got a halfway decent pic of one bear eating at the corn pile. Less than 80 yds from my back door.

While some guys have taken hundreds of bears with the 270, I can tell you from experience its best to go over-gunned than undergunned. Most of my hunters get the jitters big-time, screw up the shot and I'm stuck with a late night tracking job. 30 cals are far better especially if this is your first bear.
