lots of options

For starters, you can't draw 40 with no points anymore as a nonresident.  That ship has sailed.  Right now it takes 1 point for 2nd season, 3 for 3rd season.  So 3rd season would be a reasonable value unless you're looking for something different.

What did you like and dislike about it?  Would you go back?

There's a ton of other options out there, but you need to narrow down what you're looking for (terrain, vegetation, season, trophy classes, success, wilderness, etc).

Don't forget you may be able to pull some of the high country early rifle hunts too.

I would go back mostly cause

I would go back mostly cause I'm some what familiar with some of the area.. I'm just looking for a nice 150 inch buck.. There was alot of private in 40. I have talked to a couple people that keep saying 55 would be a better place to try...

good unit

You're way shy of the points need for 3rd season in 55, but you could draw 2nd season.  Success jumps from about 55% to 75% 2nd to 3rd season.

you don't have the points

You don't have what you need to hunt those units in 3rd season.

Figure out when you want to hunt, then see what's available.

You can get into better units sooner in 2nd season with 4 points, but your success rates increase during 3rd season almost universally.  Then there's also 4th season out there which has another increase in success over 3rd typically, but is much harder to draw.

Not sure what advice to give, I've been looking into Colorado hunts also and the GMU's that keep popping up are 2,61,44,21,10,66,67,70 from my limited research.  I don't currently have any points in Colorado, I've only gotten into muley hunting the last couple years and have just started building them.  I hunted 2nd season in the 41,42,421 back in 99 mainly for elk although we also had deer tags, saw some small bucks and found some nice shed antlers in the oakbrush.  If you don't mind me asking how was that hunt and would you go back?  I was considering it for 3rd season just because I had been there once and had a decent chance to draw it.  They aren't having a 4th season this year.  My goals are similar to yours, any mature buck would be a trophy for me on my first Colorado muley hunt.  Thanks for any help you can give.

41,42,421

mcseal2

we hunted mostly around collbran, because one of the guys that talked us into the tags hunts around there i beleive thats 421....we had 2nd season tags which we traded for 3rd cause of another hunt my hunting partner was on.I hear there was some good bucks killed 2nd season cause they got alot of snow, 3rd season was a different story. the snow had melted and it got real warm before the season the deer moved way back up high and where hard to find we didnt see many deer period.. i only seen a huge 2x3 killed and some smaller 2 points i heard from a friend and his resident buddy that it was a bad year and they had never seen it like that and also was the first year in many that they did not fill their tags.... as for going back to that unit i would do it again mainly because of what i was told about it and i know alittle bit of the area, there is a lot to cover. i would be going this year but i am guna burn my points in 2nd season unit 44, reason being i can get land owner vouchers in 41,42,421.

so now i amlooking into  44 i hope that answered some of your questions

Thanks alot for the reply, I

Thanks alot for the reply, I really appreciate the help.  I am glad to hear that it wasn't a terrible place to hunt, just unlucky timing.  I know how the weather can help or hurt, that's just part of hunting.  There is definitely alot to cover we are looking at going out on a scouting trip this summer and packing in to learn the terrain.  I'll let you know what we see.

Thanks again, Mcseal2
