anybody here ever hunt the pine ridge public land for mule deer? what are the deer like as far as age structure? how bad is the hunting competition? i may have read another post about this area, but wasn't able to locate it. i'm thinking about making the trip on a weekend (which for me will end up being a weekday) so i won't be there for a long period of time trying to find a true trophy.

I haven't beent there yet but have read extensively about it. Hunting pressure is said to be extreme especially for the opener but a bit better mid week. Mulies and whitetail both in the area. But also from what I have read the success is pretty good and most of that pressure like most places doesn't get out of sight from the truck. If you head in like I know you would it should be pretty good.
A December muzzie hunt could be a good option as well.

heck, if i was finished moving into our house, i'd be muzzle loadin' right now. the tag is only $2o9! i'm thinking i might be addicted to mule deer. and to make matters worse, i am thinking about the three tags i'll have for them next year! i can't hardly wait until kansas opens in september 2o12, then colorado in october and i'm thinking nebraska in december. i'm really pretty anxious to see what the pine ridge is like, since it seems like my kind of hunting.

I have not deer hunted the Pine Ridge area, but I have seen both whitetail and mulies in the spring while turkey hunting. I have seen both in decent numbers, but since it was spring, I can't comment on trophy potential. We found a few whitetail drops, but nothing huge. I am considering heading up there at some point for deer hunting, but I think I would be chasing whitetails since that would be a new animal to hunt for me.

I lived on the Ponderosa WMA, have hunted the Pine Ridge several times, even after I left Nebraska, and have guided hunters there. There is a TON of pressure. There are a few slightly older bucks, but not many. On most public land there will be about a 50:50 muley:whitey split. Lots of deer though. In the 20-30 per square mile range would be a reasonable guess along the Ridge itself.

that's kind of a shame. i really want to hunt nebraska next year, i wish the pressure wasn't too bad. i need to find some place in central nebraska!
