Nebraska Turkey Hunting

My buddy and I are in college so we don't have much time to plan, but we are planning on coming to Nebraska to hunt some Merriams. From what we have read it looks like the best place to go is around Chadron. We will be heading down in May around the 17th. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on where to go? Thanks.

The area around Chadron is a good area, and there are lots of turkeys along the Pine Ridge.  They did have some forest fires between Chadron and Crawford about 1.5 years ago, so that changed some areas and is definitely still affecting the animals.  Where are you coming from?  Have you hunted turkeys before?

We are from Wisconsin and are avid turkey hunters.   Other people on different forums have said to have success you have to get on private land.  But there has got to be some good public hunting along pine ridge i would think

No need to go private land hunting

There is some good hunting on public land along the Pine Ridge.  I have had a pretty good success rate spring turkey hunting in Nebraska, and I have never hunted private land.

Since you are already avid turkey hunters, I don't really have any advice on how to get it done.  As far as where to go, you are on the right track.  We have hunted a couple places along the Pine Ridge, and we have always found turkeys.  Not every day and we have not been able to close the deal each time we found turkeys.  However, each new area we checked, we eventually found turkeys.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
