Navy just moved me to VA, need smb to go hunting with

Hi,

Navy just moved me to Norfolk, VA. I have never been to East Coast before and I need somebody to show me the ropes around here. Interested in varmint, deer hunting. Done and enjoyed duck hunting too.
Please help me go hunting before I deploy in December.

Thank you.

Have a great Navy day.

Head North the hunting on Marylands eastern shore is awesome and thers a good bit of public land right there. If you go a little more traveling in you Montgomery cty around DC is chock full of deer.

Thank you. I'll need to do some more research and hope that I can get enough time off to go anywhere.

Hi,
I live in northern virginia so we probably won't be able to hook up but here are a couple of suggestions.

First, check out the Virginia dept of Game and Inland Fisheris website http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/. Check out the lisence fees and also check out the Fing Game program, it will get you started in the a direction about where to hunt.

Second, since your military, I would look for the nearest base or fort, many allow hunting, and some urban bases/forts allow bow hunting. Civilians normally have to pay a fee, I assume uniformed military hunt for free. For example I have hunted on Fort A.P. Hill, which has a lot of deer on it. There are also waterfowl blinds on A.P. Hill.

Where you hunt will also determine what you hunt with. Many military bases only allow slug hunting or muzzeloader hunting during regular firearms season.

I know there are some VDGIF wildlife management areas relatively close to Norfolk.

I hope this helps.

Ofitzer
I too am a new transplant to VA Nov-05. I'm a west coaster by birth and Uncle Sam. I live in Va Beach. I'm currently in Kuwait. What base ya at. I done plenty of scouting and have alota good conections with folks I have met on other Va hunting web sites. I'm stationed at NOB with HC-4. Chicahomeny is one of the closeist WMA's thats a no lottery hunt plus they have a shooting range. The Dismal swamp WMA is a draw. But for base hunting the sky is the limit. I had my spot picket out at Oceana. Seen bucks EVERY time I passed the spot. Oceana is archery and ML. But like all the other bases ya have to qualify before ya get a permit. They should still have some going on. Oceana is where they do them. Call the pass and ID to get the info. Also you can hunt Dam Neck (some really nice bucks), FT Eustis, Fentress air field and the other bases around the area except Langley and I believe Little Creek not sure on that one. If your gonna be in the area for awhile try puting in for the Radford Arsenal hunt. Its a draw point system hunt. Some monster bucks to be taken out there. If you only shoot rifle then you'll have to go west of the Blue ridge. Some areas you can use shotgun with slug or buck shot but most is only bow and ML. Hope the info helps.

Thank you all for replies. Great info! Looks like I will need to get a muzzleloader next time I go to a gun show. Base hunts might be the ticket. As long as I get enough time away from the ship (USS KAUFFMAN). Thanks again. Big smile

Sorry for the delay, been underway for a couple of weeks. It's a FFG. Before that did a couple of Westpacs on an AOE out of WA.

Small boys eh. I'm not one for sea sickness so I stuck to the big boys.
